The pattern had become seasonal rather than episodic.5 The sequence began in late June. EDF shut two reactors as a precautionary environmental measure when rising river temperatures threatened discharge limits, Yahoo News reported on Thursday (2026-06-25).4 MetDesk had flagged June as the period of greatest risk this summer for low river levels and high water temperatures at French reactors, Montel reported earlier in the season.2 The summer proved more disruptive than that baseline implied, with significant outages extending through July and into early August. EDF's H1 2026 results, released on Wednesday (2026-08-05), showed French nuclear output at 189.9 TWh in the first half of the year.6 The company reiterated full-year guidance of 350-370 TWh for 2026 and 2027.6 Reaching the midpoint of that range would require roughly 170 TWh in the second half, a pace that sustained heat curbs have been steadily eroding.6 The financials remained solid. EDF reported H1 EBITDA of €14.1bn, net income of €5.2bn and cash flow of €2.6bn, against net financial debt of €51.5bn, with carbon intensity at 26.5 gCO₂/kWh.6 But the operational question running into autumn is whether the fleet can recover enough generation to stay within the guidance envelope. EDF separately called electrification "imperative" for France on Wednesday (2026-05-20), amid the energy shock from the Iran war, announcing a plan to grow power demand by 5.5 TWh or around 1% per annum, with heat pumps and electric trucks each potentially adding 0.5 TWh a year, Montel reported.1 Higher structural demand amplifies the cost of any nuclear shortfall. The near-term test is river conditions through September. EDF's longer-run generation potential exceeds 400 TWh, but that assumes the fleet runs close to design capacity.6 Further heat curtailments would pressure a guidance range that already spans 20 TWh. Loire and Rhône catchment hydrology will be the clearest leading signal for whether the autumn recovery pace can offset what the summer has taken.6
