EDF Blames Jellyfish Swarm for 3.2 GW Gravelines Outage as Nuclear Availability Hits Year-Low
A massive jellyfish influx has knocked out 59% of Europe's largest nuclear plant, pushing French fleet availability to its lowest point this year.
EDF disclosed on Tuesday (2026-08-11) that a "massive influx" of jellyfish had forced a 3.2 GW curtailment at its Gravelines nuclear facility, the largest nuclear plant in Europe at 5.4 GW of installed capacity. The utility had initially attributed the outage only to a "failure," Montel reported, before clarifying the biological cause later the same day.5
The timing compounds an already strained picture for French nuclear supply. Heat-related restrictions across the fleet were set to reach 14.4% of total capacity on Wednesday (2026-08-12), with overall fleet availability sliding to 57% — a year-to-date low, Montel reported. That puts roughly 43% of France's nuclear generation either offline or constrained during a period of peak summer demand.5
Gravelines sits on the English Channel coast in northern France, where seawater drawn in to cool reactors can become clogged by seasonal jellyfish blooms. The same plant suffered a similar disruption in August 2025, when three reactors — 2.7 GW of capacity — shut automatically after a jellyfish swarm entered the water intake systems, according to Guardian reporting at the time. The recurrence in 2026 underlines a physical vulnerability that coastal nuclear operators have not managed to eliminate.2,5
The scale of Tuesday's (2026-08-11) cut — 3.2 GW representing 59% of Gravelines' nameplate output — is large enough to register across interconnected European power markets. German power for day-ahead delivery was quoted at €131.87/MWh in the session ending 2026-08-11, while ICE Endex TTF front-month gas settled at €58.67/MWh in the same session, down 3.53% on the day. The TTF move reflects separate supply dynamics rather than any relief from the French shortfall.5
France's nuclear fleet has faced a layered set of constraints through the summer of 2026. In early July (week of 2026-07-06), EDF cut output at its 910 MW Blayais 1 reactor to 628 MW and flagged potential restrictions at its 3 GW Chooz plant as temperatures climbed. A month earlier, in late June (2026-06-24), the utility was managing heat-related curtailments across roughly 3% of its nuclear capacity, Montel reported. France's role as a net power exporter to neighbors including Germany, Belgium and the UK means domestic supply shortfalls transmit directly into regional price formation. When French nuclear availability drops sharply, neighboring grids must either draw more on gas-fired generation or reduce import flows from France — either outcome tends to tighten the European gas-to-power relationship and press on ICE EUA Dec-rolling carbon prices through higher gas burn. The available data do not confirm whether that mechanism is currently active in Tuesday's (2026-08-11) generation stack.5
EDF's longer-term capacity outlook rests heavily on its EPR2 programme, six reactors of 1.7 GW each, with a total forecast cost of €72.8 billion as of the 2025 annual results. The company's board approved a €2.7 billion budget for the programme in 2026, with a final investment decision targeted by end-2026. None of that new capacity arrives soon enough to affect near-term availability.1
The jellyfish problem is not unique to Gravelines. Coastal nuclear plants across Europe use once-through seawater cooling, making intake screens a recurring point of failure during blooms that have grown more frequent in warmer coastal waters. EDF has not disclosed what modifications, if any, it made to Gravelines' intake systems following the 2025 incident.2,5
The immediate question for traders is how quickly EDF can restore output at Gravelines, and how much further heat-related constraints — already pushing fleet availability to 57% — deteriorate into the peak of the August demand period. Wednesday (2026-08-12) was already flagged as a fresh low for nuclear availability before the jellyfish curtailment was factored in. Any delay in clearing the blockage, or any additional biological or thermal event, would extend the supply gap into a week when French and German power grids are carrying limited margin.5
