EDF's French Nuclear Fleet Posts 8-Year July High Despite Mid-Month River Cuts
France's July nuclear output hit an eight-year high even as a single heatwave day removed 6.4 GW from the grid, EDF's half-year results show.
EDF's half-year report, published Wednesday (2026-08-05), logged French nuclear generation at 189.9 TWh for the first half of 2026, underpinning Montel's finding that July output reached an eight-year seasonal high — a result that arrived despite a mid-month heatwave that stripped 6.4 GW from the French grid in a single day.5
France generates roughly 70% of its electricity from nuclear plants, and sustained high output keeps it the continent's largest power exporter. When the fleet runs near capacity, surplus generation flows into neighbouring grids, suppressing regional wholesale power prices and reducing the call on gas-fired generation. That is the sequence that links French nuclear availability to European gas markets. RTE data showed France was still shipping more than 10 GW across its borders even at the peak of the July heat, limiting whatever price support the curtailments might otherwise have provided.2,3
The curtailments on Monday (2026-07-13) were themselves substantial. A 6.4 GW reduction in a single morning, equivalent to 14% of France's total power demand at the time, came as river temperatures on the Rhone climbed beyond environmental thresholds for cooling water discharge.2 EDF had already been forced to shut two reactors temporarily by late June (2026-06-25), when the same river constraints triggered precautionary closures during an earlier hot spell.4
Yet the aggregate July figure, according to Montel, still cleared a level not seen for that calendar month since 2018. Underlying fleet availability was evidently strong enough to absorb those forced interruptions. EDF's full-year target of 350-370 TWh for 2026 remains intact as stated in the half-year report, with a longer-term ambition of generating more than 400 TWh annually once Flamanville 3 is fully integrated. The company's carbon intensity came in at 26.5 gCO₂/kWh for the period, a figure that reflects how heavily weighted the French generation mix remains toward low-carbon output.5
RTE offered its own assessment on Thursday (2026-07-16). The grid operator confirmed France would remain a significant electricity exporter throughout the summer, acknowledging that record curtailments had occurred but describing them as temporary disruptions to what was otherwise a well-supplied position. Export volumes held above zero through the worst of the heat, a point the TSO presented as evidence of the system's broader resilience.3
The river-temperature problem is not new for EDF. In mid-June (2026-06-17), the company warned that high Rhone temperatures could force output cuts at the 2.7 GW Saint-Alban plant in southeastern France and the 3.6 GW Bugey facility. A Kpler analyst told Montel at the time that the tension between maximising output and environmental limits on river discharge had become a recurring management constraint, one that grows more difficult to navigate in hotter summers.1
Wednesday's (2026-08-05) financial results reflected the strong operational half. EDF posted H1 EBITDA of €14.1bn and net income of €5.2bn, though the company noted the period was marked by lower market prices. ICE Endex TTF front-month gas sat at €55.92/MWh on Wednesday (2026-08-05), and German power traded at €130.04/MWh, both broadly flat on the day.5
August river temperatures now set the pace for H2. Sustained Rhone heat would force fresh curtailments at Saint-Alban and Bugey, pulling generation below the trajectory needed to hold the 350-370 TWh annual range. France's position as Europe's largest nuclear exporter means any downward revision there would tighten French and German power balances well before gas markets registered the shortfall.1,5
