Heat-related curtailments to France's nuclear fleet reached 7.6 GW on Monday (2026-08-03), equivalent to 12% of installed capacity and the steepest reduction since the latest heatwave began the week of 2026-07-27, Montel reported, citing EDF data.7 The figure is the highest of the current heatwave but not the market catalyst it might appear. ICE Endex TTF front-month was down 2.87% at €55.92/MWh on Tuesday (2026-08-04); German power also fell in the same session. EDF's own forward schedule explains the direction: curtailments are projected to ease to 4.3 GW (7% of the fleet) on Tuesday (2026-08-04), and fall again to 3 GW, or 5% of installed capacity, from Thursday (2026-08-06) through August 13. The company updates the figures as the meteorological situation evolves.7 France's nuclear fleet supplies roughly 70% of the country's electricity, making it the dominant generation source with no parallel in any other major European economy. But its scale also means France retains significant export capacity even when curtailed. At the 6.4 GW reduction level recorded on Monday (2026-07-13), cuts equivalent to 14% of France's total power demand that morning according to OilPrice.com, RTE data showed France still exporting over 10 GW to neighboring countries. The export surplus dampens the cross-border price signal that would normally accompany a disruption of this magnitude.4 This summer has delivered multiple curtailment waves, each triggered by the same thermal constraint. EDF cut output by 3 GW, or 4.6% of capacity, on Wednesday (2026-07-08) as temperatures hit 42°C, including plans to disconnect the 1.3 GW Golfech 2 reactor on the Garonne River in southwestern France. Output curbs climbed from 1.6 GW at 09:00 CET to 3 GW by noon, Montel reported. By Thursday (2026-07-09), curtailments had risen to 6.4% of installed capacity.2,3 The week of 2026-07-13 brought the sharpest episode before the current one. EDF shut three reactors entirely and curtailed others on Monday (2026-07-13), bringing total cuts to 6.4 GW — equivalent to 14% of France's overall power demand at that point per OilPrice.com. A separate episode in late June (2026-06-25) had already prompted EDF to shut two reactors as a precautionary environmental measure when rising river temperatures exceeded discharge thresholds.4,5 The mechanics are consistent across episodes. French reactors draw cooling water from the Loire, Rhône, Garonne, and other rivers, and regulators cap the temperature of water returned to those rivers to protect aquatic ecosystems. When ambient temperatures surge, those discharge limits bind sooner, forcing partial or complete shutdowns. Politico reported that France faces recurring questions about whether its nuclear infrastructure can sustain its role on what it called the planet's fastest-warming continent.6 EDF's 2025 annual results reported nuclear output of 373 TWh, a record for the fleet. The company also recorded 23 of 43 scheduled outages completing ahead of schedule in 2025, an average improvement of around 8 percentage points in on-time delivery rates. Heat-driven curtailments sit outside the maintenance calendar and cut directly into full-year generation targets.1 EDF revises its curtailment projections daily, and the 3 GW floor penciled in from Thursday (2026-08-06) through August 13 is a plan, not a commitment. A new heat pulse or unexpectedly high river temperatures could push the figure higher before the period ends. Power traders will watch EDF's daily data releases for any upward revision to that floor before mid-August.7
