ERCOT Weekly Load Sets Record as Interconnection Queue Swells to 474 GW EIA data showing Texas averaged 74.5 GW for the week of Aug. 22 underscores tightening reserve margins as data center filings dwarf what the grid can realistically absorb. ERCOT's weekly average electricity load hit a record 74.5 GW for the week ending August 22 (2026-08-22), the EIA reported on September 3 (2026-09-03) — 10% above the highest weekly average recorded in summer 2025 and 6% above the previous record. The following week ending August 29 (2026-08-29) came in at 73.7 GW, just fractionally below that mark. Both readings followed ERCOT registering an unofficial all-time hourly peak of 91 GW on July 22 (2026-07-22).6,5 The sustained loading has arrived as ERCOT's reserve margin has already compressed. NERC's Summer Reliability Assessment, published in June (2026-06-03), placed ERCOT reserves at 29%, down from 34%, with roughly 1.9% demand growth and no substantial new net internal supply added to the system. That assessment rated ERCOT at "high potential for insufficient operating reserves" under normal peak conditions — before the grid ran at record weekly averages for multiple consecutive weeks.1 Utilities and grid planners have been raising load growth projections sharply. ERCOT's vice president of system operations, Dan Woodfin, said demand could exceed 92 GW given hotter-than-normal weather and load growth from data centers and crypto-mining. A market report from Ascend Analytics, published in August (2026-08-12), projected ERCOT peak demand at 120 GW by 2030 — more than 30% above the current unofficial record — while noting that figure sits below ERCOT's own internal forecasts.3,2 The gap between projected demand and deliverable supply forced procedural changes. ERCOT's board approved two sets of interconnection rules on June 2 (2026-06-02): a batch-review process for large new electricity users and collateral requirements designed to filter committed projects from speculative filings. The backdrop was hard to ignore. Interconnection requests to ERCOT had swelled to roughly 474 GW, about 90% of it data center load and more than five times the grid's record peak demand.2,4 ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas addressed the queue numbers directly. Speaking on June 2 (2026-06-02), Vegas said the earlier projection that as much as 228 GW of queued capacity could come online by 2032 was "too high of a figure based on realistic expectations."2 The same queue-discipline dynamic is visible elsewhere in US interconnection management. Exelon cut its "high probability" data center load forecast from roughly 18 GW to about 11 GW on July 30 (2026-07-30), a reduction of nearly 40%, while its broader interconnection pipeline fell from about 43 GW to 25 GW within a single quarter, according to oilprice.com. Only around 4 GW of that pipeline carried signed transmission service agreements backed by $1 billion in posted collateral. CFO Jeanne Jones said the requirement means "we now weed out speculative projects."4 Supply-side constraints compound the picture further. Gas turbine equipment orders in the first half of 2026 were priced more than 20% above Q4 2025 orders, per oilprice.com, reflecting supply chain pressure from the same wave of data center development driving ERCOT's queue. Long lead times mean that even projects with genuine load commitments face physical bottlenecks that no financial qualification rule can resolve on its own.4 NYMEX Henry Hub front-month gas was priced at $2.91/MMBtu at week's end, keeping gas generation competitive within ERCOT's energy-only market structure. But low fuel costs do not accelerate turbine delivery schedules, and they do not restore a reserve margin that has narrowed by five percentage points in a single assessment cycle.1,5 The ERCOT interconnection rules approved in June (2026-06-02) remain subject to finalization. How quickly they thin the 474 GW queue — and whether demand forecasts above 92 GW under hot weather force ERCOT into emergency reserve calls next summer — gives the clearest forward read on where the grid's physical limits actually sit.2,1
