The Niño 3.4 weekly SST index reached +3.3°C in the week ending August 19, with the three-month ONI lagging behind at +1.4°C, a gap that reflects how fast this event has intensified. Subsurface temperature anomalies reached +10.0°C at depth in the central-eastern Pacific, the thermocline sits measurably deeper than the historical mean, and the SOI printed near -2 standard deviations in July. NOAA CPC's August 20 prognostic discussion assigns greater than 90% probability to a very strong event persisting through NH fall and winter, with a 69% chance the OND 2026 RONI value exceeds +2.5°C, which would make this the strongest El Niño in the instrumental record dating to 1950. The teleconnection picture around this anchor is more contested. The NAO closed July at -1.28, and the GEFS 16-day ensemble holds it near neutral to slightly negative through mid-September, no persistent positive NAO support for European temperatures during the transition period. The AO, by contrast, shows a transient stratospheric pulse in GEFS: ensemble members push the AO to +1.89 by day 6-7 before relaxing to +1.68, suggesting a brief polar vortex strengthening that caps cold-air risk in the first half of September but carries no lasting signal. The QBO is in its easterly phase at -1.2 m/s at 50hPa. That matters for winter positioning: easterly QBO raises polar vortex disruption risk in boreal winter, competing directly with the El Niño teleconnection that typically favors a positive NAO and mild western European winters. The MJO is weak at Phase 4, amplitude 0.6, providing negligible near-term tropical forcing. --- 6-Week Temperature Trajectory The EC46 ensemble presents a directionally consistent autumn onset story across the Northern Hemisphere. Northwest Europe cools steadily and confidently: Frankfurt moves from 18.6°C in week 1 to 12.9°C by week 6, and critically the ensemble spread widens from a tight ±1.2°C in week 1 to ±3.8°C by week 6, bracketed between 9.3°C and 16.9°C. That spread represents genuine uncertainty about the pace of autumn cooling, not about the direction. ECMWF's regional probability data reinforces this, Frankfurt's cold_1sd probability averages 6.4% and peaks at 17.6%, against a warm_1sd probability of just 1.5%. London and Amsterdam show the same cold-skewed structure with narrower cold probability distributions, reflecting their maritime moderating effect. Madrid is the noteworthy outlier. The ensemble shows a sharp warm spike in week 2 (26.2°C, up from 23.0°C in week 1), consistent with the EC46 change data flagging Madrid September 6-7 running +2.1-2.2°C warmer than the prior run. This is a regional late-summer ridge, not a persistent autumn warm signal, by week 6, Madrid falls to 17.7°C. Iberian power traders have a narrow window. East Asian cooling is proceeding on schedule but at a slightly faster pace than yesterday's run suggested. Nagoya drops from 27.2°C week 1 to 19.7°C week 6 on a tighter spread (±3.6°C by week 6) than European counterparts, making Japan the highest-confidence cooling trajectory in the ensemble. The EC46 change data flags both Nagoya and Tokyo revised down by -1.9 to -2.5°C for the August 28-31 window, a meaningful downward shift in near-term Japanese cooling demand expectations. Houston's week-6 range of 20.8-28.6°C is wide enough to straddle meaningful gas demand variance, with the ensemble mean falling to 25.2°C. --- Regional Seasonal Outlooks Europe. The C3S multi-system ensemble, drawing on ECMWF, Met Office, Météo-France, and DWD, among others, carries a consistent temperature signal: above the 80th percentile of the climatological distribution for most of the continent through autumn, weakening somewhat over Scandinavia and eastern Europe. ECMWF's August 10 bulletin explicitly notes this is one of the stronger European seasonal temperature signals in recent forecast cycles. Where agencies diverge is on precipitation: ECMWF's autumn wetter signal for southern and western Europe is flagged as lower-skill, and the probability of above-normal autumn wind across the North Sea corridor is not clearly resolved. DWD's individual contribution to the C3S ensemble does not materially contradict the temperature direction, but confidence in the precipitation tilt is modest. East Asia. JMA's SON outlook aligns with classic El Niño teleconnection: above-normal temperatures for central and southern Honshu, above-normal precipitation for eastern Japan. KMA shows a similar warming tilt for the Korean Peninsula. CMA's SON outlook flags below-normal temperature risk in northeastern China, Manchuria, a signal that runs slightly counter to the El Niño default and likely reflects interference from the deeply negative PDO at -9.90. A cold Manchurian autumn historically supports elevated domestic Chinese coal demand for heating. Russia. Roshydromet's seasonal framework raises below-normal temperature risk for Western Siberia in September-October. If it verifies, it compresses domestic gas availability margins. The easterly QBO adds a tail risk for January-February 2027: polar vortex disruption events are statistically more frequent under QBO-east, and a sudden stratospheric warming in mid-winter would route cold air toward Europe on a timescale of two to four weeks. South and Southeast Asia. ECMWF now places the positive Indian Ocean Dipole as the likely outcome for the coming months, with stronger inter-model agreement than in prior forecast cycles. Positive IOD suppresses convection over the maritime continent, already observed, and typically shortens the Indian summer monsoon retreat. Mumbai's EC46 trajectory holds at 26.0-27.3°C over six weeks, reflecting monsoon thermal inertia. The Indonesia coal-producing region faces a prolonged suppressed-rainfall pattern through at least October. Americas. NOAA CPC's SON temperature outlook carries its highest confidence, above 50% probability of above-normal temperatures, across the Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies, and northern High Plains. Above-normal precipitation is forecast from the southwestern CONUS to the southern High Plains, a textbook El Niño response. Atlantic hurricane season is being materially suppressed by elevated vertical wind shear from the El Niño; Gulf Coast LNG and refined products disruption risk through November is below seasonal norms. For Brazil, ECMWF's wetter-than-normal signal for southern South America provides the seasonal setup for SE/MW hydropower reservoir recovery entering the November-March wet season. --- Hydro & Storage Nordic reservoirs enter autumn from a mixed summer position. ECMWF's wetter autumn signal for southern and western Europe is only loosely correlated with Norwegian catchment inflows, offering limited certainty for Nordic hydro recovery. EU gas storage tracking modestly above the 5-year average heading into September provides a comfortable starting position, but the distribution of risks is asymmetric: a warmer November (the base case from the seasonal signal) slows early-winter draw, while QBO-east polar vortex disruption risk in January-February 2027 represents the tail scenario that erases the storage cushion quickly. Brazil's ONS Southeast-Midwest reservoirs have run below decade-average levels through the dry season; El Niño precipitation teleconnection, if it verifies, supports meaningful recovery through Q1 2027 and reduces thermal dispatch pressure on the system. --- Strategic Positioning - European TTF Cal-27 and Q1-27 gas: The base case, ECMWF above-80th-percentile autumn warmth combined with modestly above-average storage, argues for near-term curve weakness through November. But the QBO-east/polar vortex disruption tail is the asymmetric risk to hold premium on Q1-27 options. Structure trades that monetize the contango in Oct-Dec 2026 while preserving upside on Jan-Feb 2027. - JKM LNG October-November: Tokyo/Nagoya cooling trajectories are the most confident temperature signals in the EC46 run. The downward revision in Nagoya and Tokyo for late August adds urgency, Japanese autumn gas demand may front-run expectations. October and November JKM versus TTF spread has room to tighten. - China thermal coal (Qinhuangdao spot, Oct-Nov): CMA's below-normal temperature signal for Manchuria diverges from the El Niño default warmth and, if it verifies, drives early-season heating demand. Chinese domestic coal stocks entering autumn are the mitigating variable, but the directional skew favors thermal coal support into Q4. - Brazilian power (PLD Q1-27): ECMWF and NOAA CPC both signal above-normal wet-season precipitation for southern South America. The El Niño hydrology setup argues for lower average PLD prices in Q1 2027 versus current forwards, with the caveat that October-November reservoir levels are the critical intermediate checkpoint. - US natural gas Henry Hub winter strip: NOAA CPC's SON warming across the western and central CONUS reduces shoulder-season demand. However, the strong El Niño precipitation signal for the southwestern CONUS may drive hydroelectric generation that competes with gas in WECC. Winter strip positioning should look to December 2026 and January 2027 as the highest-risk months, particularly if the QBO-east polar vortex risk materializes toward the eastern half of the country. - Indonesian thermal coal: Positive IOD and El Niño-driven rainfall suppression in the maritime continent extends through at least October. Port operations and mine-to-rail logistics in Kalimantan tend to run more smoothly in drier conditions, supporting export volume and weighing modestly on ICE Newcastle spot premiums through Q4.
