ICE Endex TTF front-month settled 2.97% higher at €63.62/MWh on Tuesday (2026-08-18), and German next-day power closed 2.03% higher at €134.46/MWh, as French nuclear availability continued to track near a three-year low following a fortnight of heat-driven output cuts. Montel's weekly fleet assessment published Friday (2026-08-14) confirmed the fleet had reached its weakest availability reading in three years.7 France's reactor fleet provides roughly 70% of the country's electricity. When summer heat pushes river temperatures above regulatory limits, EDF must cut output to avoid returning cooling water that breaches discharge rules — a constraint set entirely by weather, not fuel or maintenance schedules. The current sequence of heatwaves has made that constraint a recurring feature of the supply picture since at least June.6 EDF data showed heat-related cuts covering 13.2% of the reactor fleet on Tuesday (2026-08-11), rising to 14.4% on Wednesday (2026-08-12), Montel reported. Total availability on Tuesday (2026-08-11) fell to 57%, a year-to-date low at the time. The heatwave driving those cuts was, by EDF's own description, at least the fifth severe hot episode to grip France this year.5,6 The day-ahead power market responded sharply. France's day-ahead price surged as much as 21.8% to 142.5 euros per MWh on Tuesday morning (2026-08-11), per LSEG data cited by Reuters, with generation expected to remain constrained at the mid-day peak on Wednesday (2026-08-12). EDF showed the fleet would lose 7.3 GW on that day — 12% of total installed capacity — during peak hours.6 Two units illustrated the accumulated pressure. EDF planned to halt its 910-MW Bugey 3 unit from 22:00 CET on Tuesday (2026-08-11) until August 19, citing "environmental issues." The plant had already been running 440 MW short of nameplate output before the full halt. At the 915-MW Tricastin 4 reactor, EDF simultaneously cut output by 735 MW. Together those two moves removed roughly 1.2 GW of additional firm generation at the peak.5 This pattern was not confined to August. French nuclear generation was cut by 6.4 GW during a prolonged July heatwave that raised river temperatures beyond safe discharge limits, OilPrice.com reported. On Monday (2026-07-13), high temperatures forced EDF to halt three of France's 57 reactors and curtail output from others, Politico reported. France's third heatwave in two months was still underway as of Thursday (2026-07-09), Montel said, with experts forecasting conditions would persist into the week of July 13 (2026-07-13).6,4,3 The repeat losses put EDF's output targets under pressure. The company's half-year report recorded French nuclear generation of 373 TWh in 2025, with planning figures pointing to around 404 TWh for France. EDF had sold 92.3 TWh in medium- and long-term power contracts by end-2025. Sustaining peak-season availability below 60% narrows the room to deliver on those commitments and complicates the company's position as Europe's largest net electricity exporter.2 France's stated answer is new capacity. EDF has a EUR 73bn plan covering six new reactors with a combined 10 GW. The European Commission opened a formal state-aid investigation into the subsidy scheme on Tuesday (2026-05-19), Montel reported, raising the prospect of prolonged regulatory proceedings before any construction can advance. New units on that timeline arrive years after the existing fleet must manage another set of summers with the same physical constraints.1 EDF's Bugey 3 was scheduled to exit its shutdown by Wednesday (2026-08-19). Whether environmental conditions have returned within the limits that forced the original halt has not been confirmed. The fleet's broader recovery from three-year availability lows depends on temperatures staying below the thresholds that triggered output cuts on at least five separate occasions since June.5,7
