Uranium Energy Extends 2026 Losses as Oklo Advances HALEU Reactor Plans
The URA uranium ETF fell 1.38% on August 10 as UEC's reserve model and Oklo's advanced reactor bet pull the sector's investment case in opposite directions.
The Global X Uranium ETF slipped 1.38% to $44.38 on August 10 (2026-08-10), underscoring how the sector's equity recovery has lagged the uranium price move that preceded it. Uranium Energy Corp has been among the sharpest underperformers in 2026 despite sitting on a reserve of 1.46 million pounds as of its fiscal third quarter — a physical stockpile intended to cushion the stock through commodity price swings.7,8
Uranium prices had moved decisively higher into that period. TradeTech's monthly long-term uranium price indicator climbed to $93.00 per pound on March 31, 2026, its highest in more than 18 years, while spot uranium stood at $86.55 per pound as of May 1, 2026, up 24% over the preceding twelve months.1
For Uranium Energy, the reserve position is the central investment thesis: physical inventory that appreciates when spot prices rise and provides balance sheet heft when they fall. Yet the stock underperformed anyway. Production ramp timelines, corporate overhead and the gap between spot prices and long-term contract realization all erode the leverage that reserve holders advertise.7,8
The divergence between uranium fundamentals and equity performance was already visible before summer. On May 19 (2026-05-19), Uranium Energy tumbled 9%, Oklo fell 5%, and Energy Fuels slid 6% in a single session, according to reports at the time. The sell-off swept producers and developers without discrimination.2
Oklo absorbed that hit from a materially stronger balance sheet. The company held $486 million in cash and $818 million in total liquid assets with no debt. That runway matters: Oklo has no operating reactors and faces a US Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval process of uncertain duration before its Aurora powerhouses generate any commercial revenue.2
Then on June 18 (2026-06-18), Oklo and Centrus Energy signed a letter of intent for Centrus to supply high-assay low-enriched uranium for Oklo's Aurora units. Centrus said it would draw on its previously announced $900 million HALEU task order from the US Department of Energy, alongside private capital, to support the fuel supply. Centrus shares rose as much as 9% on the news, pushing its market capitalization to $3.7 billion. Oklo gained nearly 5%, reaching a market cap of nearly $11 billion.5,4
HALEU — enriched to between 5% and 20% uranium-235, well above conventional reactor fuel specifications — remains the dominant supply bottleneck for advanced reactor developers in the United States. Securing even a preliminary arrangement with Centrus, which holds domestic enrichment capability, places Oklo ahead of most SMR competitors on fuel certainty.5
Oklo's proposition goes further than procuring fresh HALEU. The company has pointed to approximately 100,000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel accumulated in the United States over six decades as a potential feedstock. Conventional light-water reactors extract less than 5% of the energy potential from enriched uranium before removing the assemblies; Oklo's reactor design could, in principle, utilize material that existing technology leaves behind. No commercial timelines for this pathway were disclosed in available materials.6
The company has also established partnerships in the AI and data center sector, where demand for reliable low-carbon baseload power has drawn capital toward advanced nuclear developers. But partnership commitments do not substitute for regulatory approvals.3
Bear arguments hang over both names. Oklo's market capitalization of nearly $11 billion with no operating revenue requires investors to hold conviction across a multi-year approval and construction process. UEC's reserve inventory is a genuine asset, but converting physical uranium into shareholder value depends on pricing, offtake contracts, and production timelines that have not yet materialized into earnings. Sector analysis as of May 2026 flagged that developmental valuations remained stretched even after the spring sell-off.2,5
The near-term test for Oklo is whether the Centrus HALEU agreement translates from a letter of intent into contracted supply on a schedule that keeps pace with Aurora's licensing milestones in Ohio. The $900 million DOE task order underpinning the deal has yet to deliver physical fuel, and NRC approval for the Aurora powerhouse remains outstanding. Both conditions need to be met before the valuation has a revenue foundation beneath it.4,5
