Jones Act Waiver Extension Won't Move the Pump Price Needle

Data from the U.S. Jones Act fuel shipping waiver show that roughly 95% of voyages conducted under the exemption were handled by foreign operators rather than domestic carriers, according to an analysis published Sunday (2026-08-09) by oilprice.com. The finding has sharpened opposition from domestic maritime groups and congressional leaders who argue the waiver undermines American shipbuilding and seafaring jobs — even as Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Tuesday (2026-08-04) that another extension was "quite likely."
