Egypt's solar push hinges on gas displacement as Scatec targets $400M annual LNG savings
Egypt is betting on solar-plus-storage to cut LNG imports, but the economics depend on summer gas burn and a stretched grid.
Scatec ASA's Obelisk solar and battery storage project in Egypt can save the country as much as $400 million a year in liquefied natural gas imports, according to Chief Executive Officer Terje Pilskog. The roughly $600 million development pairs solar generation with storage, a configuration Egypt is counting on to displace gas-fired power at peak demand hours.2
Egypt's power sector remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and every megawatt-hour of solar that displaces gas burn chips away at the country's LNG import bill. The North African producer turned importer has been wrestling with summer demand spikes that force it to buy expensive spot cargoes, so the timing of Obelisk's dispatch profile, not just its raw capacity, shapes the actual savings figure.2,4
The project is part of a broader Egyptian push to lift renewable electricity to 60 percent of the mix by 2040, up from a base that still leans heavily on thermal generation. Private investment is driving much of that shift, with national policies opening the door to foreign developers like Scatec and Infinity Power, which is building the 259 MW Nefer Benban PV project with 120 MWh of battery storage in the Aswan Governorate's Benban complex.4,1
Solar generation in Egypt peaks during daylight hours, when gas plants currently ramp to meet air-conditioning load, and battery storage extends that output into the evening peak when gas burn is highest. Each unit of stored solar that substitutes for a gas-fired unit avoids the fuel cost plus the opportunity cost of exporting that LNG rather than burning it domestically.2
But the $400 million figure assumes a specific gas price and a specific dispatch pattern, and both can move against the project. Egypt's LNG import needs fluctuate with hydro availability, gas field output and summer heat, so a year with strong Nile hydro or weaker demand could cut realised savings well below Scatec's estimate. Pilskog himself framed the number as an annual saving of "as much as" that level, not a guaranteed floor.2,4
Infinity Power's parallel pipeline of African renewable projects, supported by agreements signed at the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town, suggests developers see Egypt as a beachhead for a wider regional buildout. The Nefer Benban modules deal with AIKO locks in supply for one of the larger solar-plus-storage installations in the Benban cluster, already one of the world's largest solar parks by installed capacity.1,3
Egypt's gas position has shifted sharply in recent years. Once a net exporter thanks to the Zohr field, the country has swung back toward import dependence as domestic production declined and summer consumption climbed, a reversal that makes every megawatt of renewable capacity a direct substitute for hard-currency outflows on LNG cargoes.4
Egypt's Red Sea ports, including Ain Sokhna, sit on a corridor that links the Gulf to Mediterranean markets, and any disruption to Suez transits would tighten global LNG availability precisely when Egypt needs to buy. That makes the import-displacement value of domestic solar higher than the headline gas price alone would suggest, though it also means the $400 million figure could prove conservative in a disrupted market.5,2
Summer peak load typically runs from May through September, and any delay in Obelisk's commissioning or shortfalls in battery performance would push more gas burn into those months, adding to import requirements at the worst possible time of year. The project's energisation date and early dispatch data against actual LNG import prints in the second half of 2026 are the numbers to track.2,4
Solar-plus-storage economics in Egypt depend on gas prices that the country itself influences through its import decisions. A tight global LNG market pushes up the value of displacement, but it also raises the cost of the gas Egypt needs when the sun does not shine, and battery capacity at Obelisk and Nefer Benban is too small to cover multi-day cloud cover or winter evenings. The real test will come on the first heat wave that coincides with a gas supply hiccup.2,15
