El Niño is accelerating, not plateauing. NOAA CPC's latest Niño-3.4 index stands at +1.2°C with the far eastern Niño-1+2 region already at +2.7°C, a warming locus that has shifted decisively into the eastern Pacific, classic of a maturing event. The NMME ensemble assigns an 81% probability to a very strong El Niño in October-December 2026, ranking it among the largest events since 1950, with a 97% chance it persists through early spring 2027. The ocean-atmosphere coupling is locked: low-level westerlies over the western Pacific, suppressed Indonesian convection, and a downwelling Kelvin wave that has deepened the eastern thermocline further. Nothing in the subsurface data suggests this reverses.
The AO is running at +1.23 and the 16-day GEFS ensemble shows it strengthening through mid-August, reaching +1.89 around day 7 before easing. Regional Seasonal Outlooks
Europe: ECMWF's seasonal forecast shows European temperatures exceeding the 80th percentile of the historical distribution virtually across the continent throughout the forecast horizon. This is not a marginal warm signal, it is broad and confident. The full C3S multi-system ensemble (Met Office, Météo-France, DWD, CMCC) does not diverge meaningfully from this warm temperature call at the continental scale. Agency agreement is high.
