The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was reconnected to the electricity grid on Saturday (2026-06-13) after nearly three days without external power, according to both the Moscow-installed plant management and Ukrainian authorities.4 The six-reactor plant, seized by Russian forces in March 2022, has not generated a single kilowatt-hour of electricity since September 2022. Yet it cannot simply be switched off. The reactors require continuous external power to run cooling pumps and safety systems, even in cold shutdown — a condition that makes every transmission-line outage a potential accident scenario.4 The latest disconnection, which lasted roughly 72 hours, followed earlier and longer blackouts. By October 2025, the plant had suffered its longest power loss since the war began, going over a week without external electricity, a situation the Independent described as "critical."3 Each such episode reignites meltdown fears. The Express reported in December 2023 that an earlier power outage at the Russian-occupied site "could have led to a nuclear catastrophe." A power failure at a military-occupied reactor is not a maintenance problem; radiological consequences attach to every grid disruption within range of the Dnipro.5 The plant's status remains frozen. Russian troops hold the site and control its operations; Ukrainian engineers no longer run the reactors. IAEA inspectors rotate through but can only monitor, not intervene. The plant cannot safely be retaken by force and cannot safely remain as it is.4 Two other nuclear developments in 2026 show how differently the same technology behaves elsewhere. France's EDF shut down two reactors in late June (2026-06-25) as rising river temperatures exceeded safety thresholds during a record-breaking heatwave, a seasonal vulnerability that intensifies as climate change pushes cooling water toward regulatory limits.6 Reduced French output tightens the European cross-border power balance at the margin. In Britain, Hinkley Point C remains the West's flagship new-build. Nine years in, the project is two years behind schedule and £10bn over budget, according to the Economist.2 When finished, its two reactors will supply 3.2 GW — about 7% of UK electricity needs — but at a cost profile that pushes the required clearing price well above current wholesale levels.2 Japan illustrates what happens when a major nuclear fleet goes dormant. Before Fukushima the country had 54 operational reactors supplying roughly 25% of its electricity, with a government target of 50% by 2030, the Economist reported.1 Fifteen years later, most remain offline. Japan's latest energy plan now targets renewables at 40-50% of generation by 2040, up from around 25% last year, and researchers from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimate the country could reach 70% renewable penetration by 2035 — a trajectory that weakens the economic case for costly reactor restarts.1 Europe's position is structurally different. Its reactors run at high utilisation when water and weather permit, but the Zaporizhzhia situation adds a tail risk with no peacetime equivalent in grid management. The reconnection on Saturday (2026-06-13) is temporary relief. The next outage at the six-unit plant will be governed by military dynamics, not maintenance schedules.4 Whether cooling systems can survive successive days-long blackouts without radiological incident — and whether European power and insurance markets have begun pricing that exposure — is the question successive reconnections have yet to resolve.3
