ECA LNG sits in Ensenada, Baja California, which lets US natural gas piped to the plant reach Asian buyers without transiting the Panama Canal or rounding through the Atlantic. TotalEnergies is the sole offtaker during the ramp-up phase, and the company framed the shipment as a step toward commercial operations at a single-train facility with a nameplate capacity of 3.25 million tonnes a year.7,53 Another Pacific-facing export point shortens the supply chain into Asia while pricing is soft. Under a 20-year agreement, TotalEnergies will lift 1.7 million tonnes a year once commercial operations begin, and together with Japan's Mitsui the two have secured a combined 2.5 million tonnes a year from Phase 1, according to Sempra.4,3 That leaves roughly three-quarters of the train's nameplate output committed before the plant is fully running. Long-dated offtake of this kind does not chase the spot price. It underpins project financing and delivers baseload volume into Asia regardless of where the benchmark prints, which is why incremental liquefaction weighs on the front of the curve rather than the back.4 The scale sits within a larger build-out. TotalEnergies said the milestone expands a global LNG portfolio that stood at about 44 million tonnes a year in 2025, part of a strategy to grow gas as a larger share of its mix.3 Phase 2 is where the real supply signal lives. Sempra has described a proposed second stage of two trains and one storage tank producing roughly 12 million tonnes a year of export capacity, a step-change that would turn ECA from a commissioning story into a material Pacific export hub.4 Demand on the receiving end is concentrated and price-sensitive. Japan and Korea together account for around 35% of global LNG demand, with Japan relying on LNG for more than 35% of its power generation after its post-Fukushima nuclear phase-down.2 Europe still sets the ceiling on how far Asian spot can fall. EU gas storage sat at 36.6% against a 55.0% seasonal norm in the May snapshot, and that deficit shapes how aggressively European buyers bid for flexible cargoes that might otherwise sail east.2 The ICE Endex TTF front-month equivalent jumped almost 11% on Friday (2026-07-10) to around €48, a reminder that a low storage base keeps Atlantic pull alive even as new Pacific supply comes online.2 The wider supply picture is not short of barrels either. Some forecasters expect Australian output over the next decade to reach as much as 100 million tonnes a year, a structural addition that sits behind the bearish tilt on Asian spot.1 The near-term signal to watch is ECA's ramp profile: how quickly Sempra moves from commissioning cargoes to steady commercial deliveries, and whether Phase 2 reaches a final investment decision. With the benchmark near $16 and European storage still well below norm, the arbitrage will decide where these Pacific cargoes actually land.4,2
