The most recent: Google, Xcel Energy, and a coalition of utilities and clean energy groups filed comments on Wednesday (2026-09-09) backing MISO's proposed "zero injection" framework. The framework would let data centers and other large loads interconnect co-located generation at the same substation without feeding power back to the grid, Utility Dive reported.5 The implications for MISO real-time demand are direct. Behind-the-meter generation dedicated to specific large loads reduces gross grid offtake, trimming the demand growth story that has supported bullish sentiment in MISO this year. Hyperscale data center operators building zero injection capacity are, in effect, stepping out of the wholesale market for part of their consumption.5,3 Grid Strategies had projected U.S. data center load growth of between 65 GW and 90 GW by 2029, numbers that underpinned bullish capacity outlooks across MISO and neighboring regions. New interconnection reliability requirements proposed by MISO on Friday (2026-08-28), including ramping and ride-through specifications for large loads, create friction and raise the technical bar for those loads to connect at speed. Zero injection frameworks compound the effect by letting load developers bypass the wholesale stack entirely.2,4 The interconnection reliability requirements framework requires large loads to demonstrate specific grid support capabilities before connecting. MISO said the proposal aims to improve its visibility into large load behavior, reflecting how rapidly the interconnection queue has grown with AI-driven data center applications.4 Regional grid operators have also been slow to upgrade transmission. FERC directed all six major operators outside Texas to overhaul transmission infrastructure in late 2021, but operators subsequently requested deadline extensions, compounding the queue backlog that data center developers face.2 MISO's generation mix shows coal holding the dispatch advantage it consolidated last year. EIA data show the dark spread — the margin between electricity prices and coal generation costs — rose 111% from 2024 to 2025, reaching $23/MWh, as MISO average electricity prices climbed 44% while coal costs rose only 3%. The gas spark spread increased from $12/MWh in 2024 to $14/MWh in 2025, constrained by a 63% jump in natural gas prices over the same period.1 Natural gas has since pulled back. NYMEX Henry Hub front-month settled at $2.89/MMBtu on Monday (2026-09-14), well below the levels that compressed MISO spark spreads last year. But that repricing has not yet shifted coal out of its dispatch advantage inside the region.1 The consensus view on MISO real-time remains modestly bullish, with summer residual load and tight reserve margins cited for support. But supply-side contrarian signals carry weight: slower demand growth from delayed large-load connections, combined with co-located generation displacing wholesale purchases, move the balance in the same bearish direction.5,3 DataM Intelligence projected global data center electricity consumption at 565 TWh in 2026, up from 447 TWh in 2025, and values the global AI data center market at $120.74 billion in 2025 on a path to over $1 trillion by 2035. The scale of the buildout suggests MISO will face sustained pressure from large load interconnection requests. But how many of those loads draw from the wholesale market versus self-supply through co-located generation is what drives real-time price formation.3 The near-term signal is MISO's pace of rulemaking on interconnection reliability requirements and how quickly the zero injection framework is formalized. A prolonged process keeps large loads in limbo and delays the demand surge that bullish MISO forecasts require.4,5
