Blair Defends Oil and Gas at Gastech as UK North Sea Decision Looms

By EnergyReader Newsroom ·
Blair Defends Oil and Gas at Gastech as UK North Sea Decision Looms Blair's Bangkok address arrived as the UK faces a North Sea field decision and Thailand moves to lock in long-term U.S. LNG supply. Tony Blair gave a defence of oil and gas from the Gastech stage in Bangkok on September 14 (2026-09-14), telling the industry it needs "practical solutions to problems" and pushing back against what he described as a tendency to treat fossil fuel workers as morally suspect. The speech came at one of the sector's largest annual gatherings, held this year in the Thai capital.7 ICE Brent crude front-month was trading at $108.02 per barrel on September 14 (2026-09-14), giving domestic production arguments a concrete fiscal dimension. Blair's remarks were not directed at any specific policy, but they landed as both the UK and Thailand face supply decisions they have been deferring.6 In London, Prime Minister Andy Burnham's Labour government has been subject to speculation that it would back North Sea oil and gas development, though its actual direction on energy policy remains uncertain, oilprice.com reported in August 2026 (2026-08-15).5 The more immediate pressure is on Rosebank and Jackdaw. Shadow energy secretary Andrew Bowie said the government "can no longer hide behind process, delay or consultation" on the two North Sea fields, Energy Voice reported on September 3 (2026-09-03), following confirmation by climate minister Katie White that the public consultation had closed. A decision is overdue.6 The Gastech venue added local texture. Thailand has been managing a gas-reliant power sector through repeated bouts of LNG market stress. When the Iran conflict erupted in early 2026, Bangkok's exposure to spot LNG prices became acute, Energy Tracker Asia reported on April 15 (2026-04-15).1 The vulnerability predates 2026. Thailand ceased LNG imports at points due to high spot prices and currency depreciation stretching back to 2021, Energy Tracker Asia noted on April 20 (2026-04-20). JKM Asian LNG was priced at $24.88 per MMBtu on September 14 (2026-09-14), expensive for a baht-denominated buyer in a market with constrained domestic supply.2 PTT, Thailand's state-owned oil and gas company, has moved toward long-term supply agreements to address that vulnerability. The firm had already signed a cooperation agreement to procure 2 million tonnes per annum of LNG from Alaska LNG over a 20-year term, oilprice.com reported in June 2026 (2026-06-30). PTT is now in early-stage talks with U.S. LNG export project developers about equity stakes and additional long-term volumes, according to anonymous sources with knowledge of the matter.4 Those talks sit within a larger bilateral framework. In October 2025, the U.S. and Thailand agreed a reciprocal trade arrangement under which Bangkok pledged to buy approximately $5.4 billion per year in U.S. energy products, including LNG, crude oil, and ethane, oilprice.com reported. For PTT, upstream equity in U.S. projects offers supply security and some insulation against spot price swings that disrupted Thai imports earlier this decade.4 The ASEAN regional power grid, which received $25 million in Asian Development Bank funding during the week of April 6 (2026-04-06), remains years from providing an alternative to gas-fired generation across the region. Thailand's near-term gas dependency is not diminishing.3 Back in Britain, the Rosebank and Jackdaw consultation has closed and opposition pressure on Burnham is explicit. Approve the fields and absorb climate criticism from within Labour's own coalition; block them and hand opponents a ready argument about sacrificing British energy output while Brent trades above $108. Blair's Bangkok speech will not resolve that calculation. But it established that the pragmatism argument has vocal advocates even inside Labour's recent history, and Burnham's team must decide before that argument grows louder.6,5
