Drone Strikes Hit Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline as Gulf Bypass Routes Face New Pressure

Multiple pumping stations on Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline were struck by drones on Thursday (2026-09-10), CNN reported, citing two U.S. officials. The attacks arrive six months into a disruption that has remade the geography of global crude flows. The Iran war began in late February and severed the Hormuz route that EIA data show carried 21 million barrels per day on average in 2022, equal to about 21% of global petroleum liquids consumption. Industry estimates put the supply loss at nearly 100 million barrels for each week of blockade. On Friday (2026-05-15), Abu Dhabi's media office said Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed had ordered construction of a new pipeline to double Fujairah's export capacity by 2027. The existing Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline, the Habshan-Fujairah line, carries up to 1.8 million barrels per day and has been running flat-out since the blockade tightened. There are gaps in that picture. ADNOC last reported capacity at 4.85 million bpd in May 2024 and has not provided an update since. The UAE's energy minister told Reuters last year that the country could push output capacity to 6 million bpd if necessary. The infrastructure to reach that ceiling has not been publicly verified.2
The Strait of Hormuz carried 20% of the world's oil and seaborne gas before the Iran war, The Guardian reported. The UAE's accelerated Fujairah build-out — still short of its 5 million bpd target, with capacity last verified at 4.85 million bpd in May 2024 — will face harder scrutiny over whether the Gulf's bypass architecture can absorb another blow.8,2
