Electric Trucks Advance Globally But Europe Stalls Below 5% Heavy-Truck Share
China dominates electric truck sales while Europe, emerging markets and the charging infrastructure needed to scale all lag behind the vehicle rollout.
China accounts for the bulk of global electric truck sales, while Europe has yet to reach 5% market share in the heavy-truck segment and many emerging markets lack the reliable grids and affordable finance to support broad deployment, OilPrice.com reported on September 3 (2026-09-03).6
The economics partly explain the gap. Electric cargo trucks carry a sticker price 50% to 100% higher than diesel equivalents, according to industry estimates cited by Canary Media, and fleet operators need sufficient savings on fuel and maintenance to recover that premium over the vehicle's working life.5
The Iran war shortened that payback calculation for many buyers. The fuel price spike it triggered made the operating cost advantage of electric freight far more concrete, Canary Media reported in July (2026-07-02). ICE Brent crude front-month held at $94.97 per barrel and US diesel at $4.54 per gallon, both as of September 5 (2026-09-05), sustaining the cost differential that makes zero-emission trucks competitive over long vehicle lifetimes.5
EDF framed the same dynamic in more urgent terms for France. The French state utility said on Wednesday (2026-05-20) that electrification was "imperative" given the energy shock caused by the war, Montel reported, announcing a plan to grow annual power demand by 5.5 TWh, or roughly 1% per year. New heat pumps and electric trucks could contribute 0.5 TWh annually to that figure, EDF said, with the utility offering "turnkey sites" carrying grid connections to attract industrial users.1
But the hardware is moving faster than the networks designed to run it. Jet Charge founder Tim Washington, speaking on the Energy Insiders podcast in the week of May 31 (2026-05-31), flagged the shortage of chargers, the need for faster machines and multiple charging bays, and the logistical complexity of integrating electric trucks into depot and route planning. His concern centred on vehicle sales outpacing the infrastructure that makes them operationally viable.4
That infrastructure lag is sharpest outside China. Emerging economies face not just limited charging networks but unreliable grid supply and thin vehicle-finance markets, OilPrice.com reported on September 3 (2026-09-03), conditions that tend to lock fleet operators into diesel well beyond the point where the economics might otherwise justify a switch.6
The mining sector shows how uneven the transition looks at site level. Across European mining operations, solar accounts for 87% of on-site fuel at active and upcoming projects as of July 2025, against just 10% for natural gas, Power Technology data show. North America nearly inverts that: natural gas provides 51% of on-site generation, solar just 4%. Australia's Climate Change Authority estimates that diesel combustion in mining contributed 20% of the sector's total emissions in 2024, a figure that underscores how much diesel displacement still remains even in markets with stated decarbonisation targets.3
Where sites run on cheap renewables, the case for battery-electric haulage is direct. Where gas or diesel still dominates on-site generation, electrifying the truck fleet does little to cut total emissions unless the upstream energy mix changes alongside it.3
Tesla's commercial semi programme, originally promised for 2019, had vehicles approaching California road deployment by May (2026-05-06), Canary Media reported. The programme is being watched by fleet buyers as a test of whether long-haul electric freight, always the harder segment, can clear the range and reliability bar that operators require.2
