Niño-3.4 weekly SST anomalies reached +3.4°C as of August 26, with subsurface temperature anomalies hitting +10°C at thermocline depth, a reservoir of heat that virtually guarantees further strengthening. NOAA CPC assigns a 69% probability that OND 2026 will constitute a historic event exceeding all El Niño peaks since 1950. Treat that as the base case, not a tail risk. Supporting teleconnections add texture. The NAO closed July at -1.28 but the 16-day GEFS ensemble keeps it oscillating near zero through mid-September, with no sustained blocking signal. More immediately, the AO trends sharply positive by days 5–8, GEFS reaching +1.89, reinforcing a strong polar vortex through early September and suppressing any early cold incursion into Northwest Europe. The MJO sits in Phase 5 at amplitude 1.0, consistent with El Niño's suppression of Maritime Continent convection. The key medium-term risk is in the QBO: easterly phase (-1.2 m/s at 50 hPa) combined with a very strong El Niño is the canonical setup for sudden stratospheric warming events in midwinter, a coupling that has historically produced severe cold outbreaks across Europe and the Eastern US. That risk is months away, but it belongs on the Q1 2027 gas strip. The PDO at -9.90, deeply negative, may dampen El Niño's typical Pacific Northwest warming footprint, though the ENSO amplitude likely dominates. 6-Week Temperature Trajectory Europe cools steadily and with reasonable confidence. In East Asia, Osaka drops from 23.6°C to 16.7°C over six weeks with a tight terminal spread of 14.0–19.4°C, high-confidence autumn arrival in western Japan. Houston holds above 26°C through week 4, but the US East Coast fractures in uncertainty by week 5 (New York: 13.0–22.8°C). In the Southern Hemisphere, Melbourne's week-6 spread of 10.5–19.5°C is essentially uninformative for demand modeling at this range. Mumbai's ensemble is the tightest in the dataset, week 6 running 26.4–28.4°C, confirming an orderly monsoon withdrawal with no power demand surprise. Regional Seasonal Outlooks ECMWF places virtually all of Europe above the 80th percentile for temperature through autumn, the signal strongest over central and southern regions. Met Office and Météo-France align on this call without material qualification. DWD's seasonal output is the single dissent, near-normal temperature probabilities emerge for parts of eastern Germany and the Alpine fringe, but the European agency consensus is otherwise unified. ECMWF also signals wetter-than-normal conditions across southern and western Europe, consistent with El Niño directing Atlantic storm tracks toward Iberia and the Mediterranean. For gas traders: above-normal autumn temperatures extend the injection window and depress early heating demand. JMA assigns above-normal temperatures for Honshu through the SON season, and KMA aligns for the Korean Peninsula. CMA signals drier-than-normal conditions across central and eastern China. The ECMWF positive IOD forecast, where inter-model agreement is described as stronger than in previous initialisations, compounds the dry signal over the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia while delivering anomalous rainfall to East Africa. Autumn LNG demand into Japan and Korea will run below prior-year comparisons if agency outlooks verify. NOAA CPC's SON outlook favors above-normal temperatures across the western and central CONUS, Pacific Northwest, and Northern Rockies at probabilities exceeding 50%, a clean El Niño composite fingerprint. The Southwest receives above-normal precipitation at 40%+ probability. For Brazil, the seasonal composite points toward above-normal rainfall in southern reservoir catchments from October onward, building the hydro generation case through Q4 2026 and into Q1 2027. El Niño's dry signal across the Maritime Continent, confirmed by MJO Phase 5, ECMWF's below-normal precipitation outlook for southern Asia and Indonesia, and the positive IOD, extends the dry season across Southeast Asia and increases thermal dispatch requirements in Indonesian, Philippine, and Vietnamese power markets. Hydro & Storage EU gas storage enters the critical final injection weeks on a firm trajectory. With ECMWF, Met Office, and Météo-France agreeing on above-normal European temperatures through October, the injection window extends, structurally bearish for prompt TTF but building a buffer that reduces winter deficit risk unless an SSW arrives. Brazil's Paraná and Grande basin reservoir levels are the key watch. El Niño's wet-season composite for southern Brazil strengthens from October onward; an early and robust onset would sharply reduce thermal dispatch and suppress power spot prices through Q1 2027. Nordic hydro faces a more ambiguous picture. AO-positive September reduces cyclone frequency and near-term inflow. El Niño's historical influence on Scandinavian precipitation is weak and inconsistent, leaving winter hydro exposure a function primarily of spring 2027 snowmelt timing rather than autumn rainfall. Strategic Positioning - TTF Q4 2026, bearish near-term: Multi-agency agreement on above-normal European temperatures through November extends injection and suppresses early heating demand. The hedge is Q1 2027: QBO-El Niño coupling raises SSW risk, and any vortex disruption by December reprices that strip rapidly. - JKM October–November, neutral to bearish: JMA and KMA both signal warmer-than-normal NE Asian autumn; LNG spot demand into Japan and Korea will disappoint versus year-ago levels. Excess cargo pressure likely supports EU storage economics over JKM. - Henry Hub November, modestly bearish: El Niño composite delivers mild winters across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. East Coast uncertainty in EC46 weeks 5–6 (New York spread: 11.3–20.3°C) argues against outright short Q1, but the seasonal tilt is lower. - Brazilian power Q4–Q1, bearish on spot: Wet-season composite is the clearest structural call in the Southern Hemisphere. Monitor CPTEC subseasonal products for the November onset date; a delayed wet season is the primary upside risk to power spot. - Newcastle thermal coal Q4, constructive: Extended Maritime Continent dry season increases thermal dispatch across Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam, one of the cleaner demand-side bullish reads on this El Niño vintage. Watch for rain-return signals in CMA and JMA subseasonal updates from October onward. - European power, watch wind premium: ECMWF's wetter western Europe signal correlates with enhanced North Sea and British Isles wind output, which is bearish for baseload clearing prices and further dampens gas-for-power demand in an already-mild scenario.
