A Seattle startup plans to lower a 100-kilowatt geothermal generator to the seafloor off Oregon's coast in September (2026-09), targeting a hydrothermal vent emitting temperatures up to 750 degrees Fahrenheit. The timing is no coincidence. It follows by roughly six weeks the most significant capital event in the US superhot geothermal sector this year: Quaise Energy's $134 million first tranche of its Series B financing, announced on Tuesday (2026-07-07), aimed at building the country's first commercial superhot geothermal plant in central Oregon.8,4 Quaise's raise comes as JERA Co., Japan's largest power generator, took a stake in the company through its corporate venture capital arm, JERA Ventures. The two companies say they will explore deploying Quaise's drilling technology in Japan, a country that sits on significant volcanic heat but has moved slowly on deep geothermal development.6 What makes Quaise's pitch distinct from conventional geothermal is the drilling method. The company uses gyrotron-powered millimeter-wave energy that melts rock rather than grinding it, enabling drilling to depths of up to 20 kilometers where temperatures run between 300 and 500 degrees Celsius, according to Japan NRG. Conventional geothermal taps heat far closer to the surface. The US currently operates about 4 gigawatts of geothermal capacity across 99 plants, more than half of them in California, according to Canary Media. Quaise is betting that reaching superhot rock unlocks energy density per well that conventional operators cannot match.3,7 Project Obsidian, Quaise's central Oregon plant, is sized at 250 MW with operations slated to begin in 2030. Idemitsu, the Japanese refiner, is also considering participating in the project, Japan NRG reported. A 250 MW dispatchable geothermal asset would be meaningful in a Pacific Northwest power market increasingly stretched by winter peak demand. But the 2030 target leaves little margin for drilling delays of the kind that have afflicted other advanced geothermal startups.3 The Japanese interest extends beyond corporate venture capital. NEDO, Tokyo's technology ministry, awarded Kyoto Fusioneering ¥500 million to develop a gyrotron for deep geothermal drilling, signaling that Japanese policymakers regard superhot rock as a credible domestic power source. Japan's seismic risk adds a design constraint absent elsewhere: earthquake-resistant engineering integrated into a 15 MW-class turbine could provide a template for future projects in earthquake-prone markets where European specifications are insufficient, Japan NRG noted.3 The policy environment in the United States is also favorable. The Trump administration continues pushing domestic energy additions through funding vehicles and executive orders targeting grid reliability and AI-driven load growth, two next-generation geothermal developers posted measurable drilling progress recently, according to Oilprice.com. That policy backdrop gives earlier-stage plays like Quaise a tailwind that prior geothermal cycles lacked.5 Proponents of superhot geothermal argue the technology can undercut nuclear on cost per megawatt-hour. No commercial superhot plant has yet delivered power at scale anywhere in the world, so those claims remain unvalidated. Meanwhile, the conventional geothermal sector is evolving. Ormat, the industry's dominant operator, is updating plant designs to capture economies of scale in a market that still generates just 4 GW nationally, Canary Media reported. Quaise's Series B is a bet that its drilling physics perform in the field, not only in simulation.7,5 In Asia, geothermal development is moving on more conventional lines. Baseload Power Taiwan and state-owned CPC Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding in June (2026-06-18) to accelerate development across Taiwan, starting with the Tuchang project in Yilan County. Indonesia and the Philippines, sharing the same Ring of Fire geology as Japan, already rank second and third globally in installed geothermal capacity but remain constrained mainly by financing and community opposition, according to The Independent.2,1 Quaise has not yet drilled a commercial superhot well. The $134 million tranche, while substantial, will not be the last capital raise required to reach first power at a 250 MW plant in 2030. JERA's and Idemitsu's involvement adds credible industrial backing, but both relationships are exploratory. The first drill results from central Oregon, and the terms of the next financing round, will show whether the Japanese capital is tracking engineering progress or an ambitious prototype.4,3
