Nuclear Stocks Trail Uranium's 34% Spot Gain as Hyperscaler Power Deals Test Conversion
Constellation Energy beat quarterly estimates and reaffirmed 20%-plus EPS growth, but nuclear equities trail the fuel's price surge as AI power contracts await real-world build progress.
The Global X Uranium ETF (URA) slipped 0.39% to $43.94 on September 2 (2026-09-02), a move that sits awkwardly alongside uranium spot prices that reached $88 per pound in early August (2026-08-07), up 34% year over year. Equity investors are not treating the two as the same trade.3
Constellation Energy (CEG) illustrates the disconnect. Shares closed at $265.12 on August 5 (2026-08-05), still down 24.73% year to date despite beating its most recent quarterly consensus by a wide margin. Constellation reported revenue of $11.12 billion, up 63.9% year over year and ahead of consensus by 27.69%, with adjusted EPS of $2.74 against a $2.61 estimate. Management reaffirmed 2026 adjusted operating EPS guidance of $11.00 to $12.00 and is targeting base EPS growth above 20% through 2029.3
CEG's scale has expanded sharply. After closing the Calpine acquisition on January 7 (2026-01-07), Constellation became the largest private US power producer at 55 GW of combined capacity. Hyperscalers are running combined capital expenditure of $710 billion in 2026, and their data centres require firm generation around the clock. Solar and wind cannot reliably meet that profile on their own.3
Nuclear's operating record makes it the preferred match. US reactors generated roughly 73.3 billion kilowatthours in January 2026 alone at a 100% capacity factor, a consistency no variable renewable source approaches. Utilities are now signing decade-plus power purchase agreements with hyperscalers at prices that would have looked implausible three years ago, betting that consistency endures.3
Still, much of the demand thesis is already priced in. Cameco (CCJ), the largest publicly listed uranium miner, carried a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 77x in early August (2026-08-07). The 34% year-over-year move in uranium spot to $88 per pound reflects genuine tightening, but spot prices and miner earnings do not translate at the same speed. For investors weighing commodity leverage against execution visibility, that figure is a more tangible signal than spot uranium prices or sentiment-driven equity moves.3
The sector's year-to-date declines, with significant drops across nuclear names following a strong 2025, reflect a market re-rating forward multiples rather than any reversal of the underlying demand argument. Countries have committed to tripling nuclear energy capacity, a policy position no major economy has publicly walked back. But build-out timelines and the capital costs attached to new capacity remain contested, and neither has been resolved.2
Investor appetite for credible power-supply stories was demonstrated starkly earlier in 2026. Fluence Energy (FLNC) shares closed at $24.16 on May 8 (2026-05-08), up 98.2% in a single week after the company disclosed master supply agreements with two hyperscalers and a record $5.6 billion backlog. Capital moved fast and with force.1
The same dynamic cuts the other way when balance sheets do not support the trade. Fluence carried stockholders' equity of -$265.88 million and cash of just $36.59 million, leaving that equity run exposed to the next earnings or contract update. Nuclear operators are better capitalised, but the principle holds: a credible demand narrative does not protect stretched multiples when execution risk surfaces.1
With the URA ETF at $43.94 on September 2 (2026-09-02) and CEG down nearly 25% year to date despite clean earnings, what the sector needs before year-end is not another announcement of a hyperscaler partnership, but evidence that signed power purchase agreements are generating confirmed project timelines and visible construction activity — the distinction between a deal on paper and load growth on the grid.3
