NOAA CPC's August diagnostic puts Niño 3.4 weekly SSTs at +3.3°C above climatology, with subsurface temperature anomalies reaching +10°C at depth, a thermal reservoir that will keep feeding the surface through at least December. CPC places a 69% probability on a historic event exceeding +2.5°C RONI during October-December 2026, which would surpass every El Niño on record back to 1950. The greater-than-90% probability of a very strong event this NH fall and winter is the single most consequential seasonal signal in energy markets today. The broader teleconnection picture has important nuances. The NAO ended July at -1.28, but the 16-day GEFS ensemble shows the AO trending sharply positive, reaching +1.89 by day seven before easing back. A positive AO consolidates the polar vortex and implies milder near-term North Atlantic conditions. The structural risk lies in the QBO. At 50hPa the QBO reads -1.2 m/s, firmly easterly. The MJO sits at Phase 6 with amplitude 0.6, too weak to provide meaningful intraseasonal forcing. 6-Week Temperature Trajectory Across NW Europe, the EC46 ensemble is high-confidence on direction and increasingly uncertain on pace. Amsterdam runs 17.4°C in week one to 13.2°C by week six, with ensemble spread widening from ±0.9°C to ±3.0°C, high conviction on the seasonal turn, lower conviction on when the first meaningful heating demand arrives. Frankfurt carries a notable warm skew: ECMWF's regional probability data shows warm_2sd days averaging 5.4% of the ensemble, meaning above-normal temperatures remain an active tail through September. The latest EC46 run-to-run changes show Paris +2.5°C for September 12 and London +2.1°C for September 11 versus yesterday's run, a signal that late-summer heat may extend into mid-September and delay the TTF demand ramp. Madrid drops from 25.6°C this week to 17.1°C by week six, with a spread of nearly 7°C in the outer weeks. In East Asia, Osaka and Nagoya cool from near 26°C to below 20°C by week six, with yesterday's EC46 revising Osaka September 4 down -2.1°C, the cooling break may arrive slightly earlier than prior runs indicated, a modestly bearish read for near-term LNG spot. Houston's trajectory runs 29.5°C to 24.7°C, but the week-six spread of 21.0°C to 27.8°C reflects genuine uncertainty about whether October delivers real autumn or an extended heat tail. São Paulo shows the most run-to-run volatility in the dataset: sharp early-September cooling (-3.2°C for September 7), then reversal toward above-normal by late September (+2.3°C). The amplitude of these revisions signals meaningful uncertainty in Brazilian hydro dispatch planning. Regional Seasonal Outlooks ECMWF's August seasonal bulletin places European temperatures above the 80th percentile for most of the continent through autumn and winter, with the signal modestly weaker only at the far northeast. This is the warmest tercile of the distribution, not a marginal tilt. Where agencies diverge: ECMWF's precipitation signal for southern and western Europe is above-normal autumn, but the bulletin explicitly flags higher uncertainty here. A wetter, more zonal autumn in NW Europe drives above-average wind speeds across Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. DWD's seasonal has not converged on this signal with equivalent confidence, creating a genuine split that matters for power curve positioning. For East Asia, the El Niño teleconnection is well-established. Japan and Korea typically see winter temperatures run +0.5°C to +1.0°C above normal. JMA, as a C3S contributing system, sits within the ECMWF multi-model framework showing above-average precipitation for eastern Asia, consistent with a classic warm El Niño winter. Reduced LNG heating demand risk for Q1 2027 is the base case, though any SSW event would override this signal rapidly. NOAA CPC's SON 2026 outlook calls for above-normal temperatures across the western and central CONUS plus the Northeast, with above-normal precipitation from the Southwest through the southern High Plains. The Atlantic hurricane season faces suppressed activity from El Niño-induced vertical wind shear in the Gulf and Caribbean, reducing infrastructure disruption risk to Gulf Coast storage. ECMWF forecasts above-average precipitation for southern South America through SON, constructive for Paraná basin reservoir recovery. The positive Indian Ocean Dipole, predicted with strong model agreement in the ECMWF August bulletin, extends Indonesia's dry season, suppresses maritime continent precipitation broadly, and increases thermal generation demand across Java-Bali at precisely the moment hydro dispatch is constrained. Hydro & Storage EU gas storage enters the autumn injection window with a warm tailwind. If ECMWF's above-normal temperature signal for NW Europe verifies through October, storage could approach the upper end of seasonal norms before the first significant cold draw, a bearish overhang for TTF Q4. Nordic reservoirs benefit from the same zonal, wetter-autumn scenario: stronger inflow and reduced thermal backup demand through Q4. Brazil's reservoirs face a critical transition. El Niño's historical wet signal for southern Brazil is constructive for September-onward recovery, but EC46's volatile early-September São Paulo forecasts suggest cold front passages and potential dry air intrusion before the wet season establishes. The next four to six weeks of precipitation verification will determine the CCEE spot trajectory. Strategic Positioning - TTF Q1 2027: ECMWF's above-80th-percentile European temperature outlook and CPC's >90% El Niño probability favor selling the winter heating premium in the Q1 strip. Maintain option coverage on January-February SSW tail risk rather than running outright short across the full winter curve. - JKM November–February: Historically warm El Niño winters in Japan and Korea support a bearish bias on JKM contracts through Q1 2027. Monitor Japanese LNG terminal queue data for demand confirmation as the seasonal turn approaches October. - Henry Hub October–January: NOAA CPC's warm SON outlook for the eastern and central US compresses early heating demand risk. An above-average storage fill through September extends the bearish window; watch weekly EIA prints for the signal. - Brazil CCEE spot (September–November): El Niño's wet signal for southern Brazil supports reservoir recovery. Fade near-term CCEE spikes on cold front passages; position for hydro recovery through October if precipitation verifies at or above ECMWF's above-normal regional forecast. - NW European power spreads: ECMWF's wetter autumn implies above-average wind generation across Germany and the UK. German Q4 base-to-peak spreads warrant attention as a tactical short on the peak leg as wind capture improves through October and November. - Indonesian thermal coal and Southeast Asian LNG spot: Positive IOD combined with El Niño extends the dry season and elevates thermal generation demand on Java-Bali. Indonesian coal and LNG spot present one of the few El Niño longs in the global energy complex through Q4 2026.
