Cameco, the Canadian miner that accounted for 15% of global uranium output in 2025, was cited in sector analysis published Wednesday (2026-08-26) as equity markets weighed which producers can actually supply the volumes an expanding nuclear fleet will require. The Global X Uranium ETF, tracking the sector and in which a US developer with Oregon deposits earned inclusion reported in early August (2026-08-03), slipped 0.44% to $48.05 on Thursday (2026-08-27).7 The arithmetic driving that attention is documented in a BNN Bloomberg report dated August 10 (2026-08-10): America's existing reactor fleet consumed around 50 million pounds of uranium last year while domestic mines produced roughly 677,000 pounds. The 74-to-one imbalance is filled by imports, with Russian fuel services contributing a share that Washington is only now beginning to quantify and replace.6 The newly indexed company holds the Aurora deposit in southeastern Oregon, identified as the largest conventional measured and indicated uranium resource in the United States under the S-K 1300 standard, with 32.75 million pounds Indicated and 4.98 million pounds Inferred. Its inclusion in the fund reflects index selectors' effort to capture domestic US supply alongside the established Canadian producers that currently dominate the ETF's composition.4,2 Purepoint Uranium CEO Chris Frostad has argued publicly that reactor construction announcements are receiving attention that fuel procurement is not. Building a reactor takes years; securing uranium to run it is a parallel and often neglected process. That gap between construction planning and fuel contracting is where the domestic deficit starts to matter operationally rather than analytically.3 The US Department of Energy has conditionally committed $17.5 billion in loans to finance up to 10 Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. A separate programme has made available up to $2.7 billion in contracts to build domestic high-assay low-enriched uranium capacity. HALEU is required by many advanced reactor designs and currently has no commercial-scale source outside Russia.5,1 Cameco's contracted position illustrates the scale advantage incumbents hold. The company has locked in commitments to deliver an average of 28 million pounds of uranium annually through 2030 and holds a 49% ownership stake in Westinghouse — the reactor manufacturer receiving the DOE loan commitment. Cameco's shares have fallen 31% from their 52-week high, suggesting markets are pricing in uncertainty alongside the contracted revenue.5 Cameco is also consolidating control at its operating mines. It agreed to pay C$115.75 million to lift its stake in Cigar Lake, described as the world's highest-grade uranium mine and located in Saskatchewan's Athabasca Basin, to 57.418%, with Orano's stake rising to 42.582%. Canada supplied more than 30% of the EU's uranium imports in 2024, making the Athabasca Basin a linchpin for Western utilities on both sides of the Atlantic.1 NexGen Energy is preparing to begin construction at Rook I, also in northern Saskatchewan, a C$2.2 billion project carrying what the company describes as the largest development-stage uranium deposit in Canada. Even with Rook I and expanded Cigar Lake production, lead times between investment decision and first output mean Western supply constraints will run well past 2030.1 US domestic output, by contrast, remains negligible at scale. Energy Fuels had forecast producing 1.6 million pounds of U3O8 by the end of June 2026. Set against 50 million pounds of annual consumption, the figure shows the distance between current domestic capacity and anything approaching self-sufficiency.1,6 Nuclear plants run at a capacity factor of around 92%, 1.5 times higher than natural gas and four times that of solar, according to the US DOE. Constellation Energy, the largest US nuclear operator, controls 22 gigawatts across 14 generating stations and supplies approximately 10% of the country's carbon-free electricity. That reliability profile sustains the policy investment — and leaves utilities with no practical backup if uranium procurement plans fall short.5 The immediate test is whether the HALEU contracting programme produces domestic commercial-scale output before the first wave of advanced reactors reaches fuel-load decisions. A slip in that timeline would push procurement teams back toward the Russian-linked enrichment infrastructure that Washington is simultaneously trying to exit.1
