Rhine Barge Costs Surge as River Revisits Record Low, Forcing German Fuel Deliveries Onto Roads
European coal traders are deferring spot purchases until September as the Rhine's collapse to 2018 lows drives logistics costs sharply higher and strains inland supply chains.
Trucks are now hauling diesel to and from Germany's Miro refinery — a 320,000 barrel-per-day facility — because Rhine water levels have made normal barge operations uneconomic or impractical. The coal ETF COAL was up 0.71% as of August 24, while ICE Endex TTF front-month gas held at €65.83/MWh on August 24, leaving the economics of gas-to-coal switching finely balanced for European utilities. Against that price structure, any September improvement in Rhine levels will test how aggressively deferred coal purchases re-enter the spot market — and whether Asian demand absorbs the available seaborne tonnage before European logistics are ready to move it.6,1
