Nuclear Investment Surges but New Capacity Stays a Decade Away From Grid
The IEA projects more than 70 GW of new nuclear capacity by the mid-2030s, but US data-center demand is set to triple well before those plants can deliver power.

The capacity pipeline is substantial: the IEA expects more than 70 GW of new nuclear to come online by the mid-2030s, which it describes as one of the strongest build programmes in three decades. But most of that capacity arrives well after the demand surge it is meant to serve.1
The US demand side is pressing hard. Data-center power consumption in the United States is set to triple from 34.7 GW in 2024 to 106 GW by 2035, according to IEA projections. Microsoft, Amazon and Google have already signed deals with nuclear operators. Washington has set a target to quadruple domestic nuclear capacity by 2050 and is moving to fast-track advanced reactor permits.1
Bridging the years between now and mid-2030s delivery is the core commercial problem. Much of the advanced nuclear conversation in the United States has remained concentrated on demonstration projects and theoretical deployment timelines rather than commercial-scale construction. Capital markets are nonetheless pricing the pipeline. A total of 25 nuclear transactions closed in 2025, up from 17 in 2024, with total deal value of $1.5 billion — the highest in seven years — according to White & Case and Mergermarket data. Europe is moving on the policy side. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called Europe's retreat from nuclear power a "strategic mistake" in March 2026 and pledged €200 million for a new generation of small modular reactors. The UK-France dimension adds a separate layer of complexity. The proliferation variable is the one hardest to price into deal flow. The IEA's 70-GW pipeline assumes that regulatory and non-proliferation frameworks hold as construction accelerates.
