Bulgaria Battery Capacity Up 50% Since June as Country Posts Record Power Exports

Energy minister Iva Petrova said on Friday (2026-08-07) that Bulgaria was shipping record electricity volumes to neighboring countries despite a sustained heatwave, with traders attributing the surge directly to the country's 4 GW battery fleet, Montel reported. Drought and extreme heat had depressed nuclear and hydropower output across southeast and central Europe, leaving storage dispatch as the primary available swing resource.5
The project pipeline underpinning the expansion has moved fast. Sungrow and its partner Sunotec commissioned a 150MW/600MWh system in Nova Zagora in mid-June (2026-06-12), developed and owned by Enery, an independent power producer active in central and eastern Europe, Power Technology reported. The partners' plans in the Nova Zagora region extend to up to 800MWh of storage capacity, with further expansion to 1GWh under consideration. They expected to bring 2.2GWh of total Bulgarian capacity online within two months of that commissioning, targeting 3GWh across their Bulgarian portfolio by end-2026. A hybrid battery and photovoltaic project at Knizhnovik, rated at 100MW/200MWh, forms part of the same pipeline.2
The pattern extends to nearby markets. Mavir, Hungary's power TSO, published data on Wednesday (2026-07-29) showing operational battery capacity had reached 700 MW, up roughly 60% since the start of June, Montel reported. Two of the region's smaller grids each expanded battery storage by more than half in under two months.4
European battery storage growth more broadly is running ahead of rates recorded a year earlier. New installations across Europe hit 36 GWh in 2025, up 48% from 2024, when growth had slowed, SolarPower Europe said in a report published on Tuesday (2026-06-23). This year's additions are expected to top 50 GWh, with annual deployment projected to reach as much as 138 GWh by 2030, a fourfold increase on 2025 volumes.3
EU-wide installed capacity is projected to reach 470 GWh by 2030. Yet SolarPower Europe estimated the bloc needs 600 GWh to meet its energy security, competitiveness, and decarbonization objectives — a gap of 130 GWh that does not close on current trends.3
For traders, Bulgaria's record export volumes during a regional heat and drought event pointed to the dispatch value that utility-scale storage can offer during supply crunches. The battery fleet, not conventional thermal generation, was the source of the excess output that crossed borders in early August (2026-08-07), they said.5
Transmission may be the limiting factor going forward. The European Parliament's lead negotiator argued in May (2026-05-21) that TSOs should allocate 35% of their excess congestion income to building cross-border capacity, up from the 25% the European Commission had proposed, Montel reported. If interconnectors bordering Bulgaria hit their limits during peak battery dispatch, export revenues will cap even as installed capacity continues to grow.1
