The offshore wind market is projected to grow to $208.33 billion by 2035 from $57.51 billion in 2026, according to market forecasts, with China leading Asia-Pacific deployment as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia build out their pipelines. Japan remains a smaller market than those neighbors, but the entry of 15MW turbines signals that project sizes are moving in the same direction.5 That scale creates logistics demands Japan's offshore supply chain has not previously faced. Installing 15MW machines requires heavy-lift vessels with crane capacities that are scarce globally, and competition for those hulls is intensifying as European projects and China's domestic build-out book them years in advance. The Oga-Katagami-Akita contract is an early data point supporting that trade-off, not a verdict on it.4 The project will also be assessed for what it reveals about Japan's appetite for technology risk in unfamiliar conditions. Vestas V236-15MW turbines carry operating history in European waters, but Japanese conditions differ in typhoon loading, seabed geology and grid constraints.
