UK Grid Operator Calls for Back-Up Power as Eclipse Threatens 2.2 GW Solar Drop
NESO's demand forecast falls 700 MW short of Modo Energy's calculations as Wednesday's (2026-08-12) partial eclipse hits embedded solar during a European heatwave.
Britain's National Energy System Operator called for back-up power on Wednesday (2026-08-12) as a partial solar eclipse, expected just after 7pm local time, threatens to remove up to 2.2 GW from embedded solar generation at its peak, according to analysis by Modo Energy. The call arrived during a heatwave sweeping the UK and wider Europe since the week of 2026-08-10.3,4
Modo's figures diverge from NESO's own forecast in a way that affects the balancing picture. NESO estimated a solar loss of around 1.1 GW from the eclipse. Modo put the average reduction between 7pm and 7:30pm on Wednesday (2026-08-12) at 1.8 GW, rising to 2.2 GW at the sharpest point of the shadow's passage. That leaves NESO's current demand forecast around 700 MW short on Modo's numbers.3
Cloud cover is the swing variable. Modo noted that NESO's 1.1 GW estimate "would cover the event on a partly cloudy evening — on a perfectly clear one it would not." A 700 MW miss does not tip the lights off, but it compounds any concurrent problems: a plant trip, an interconnector outage, or demand running above forecast as a hot evening keeps air conditioning units running longer than expected.3
The same grid operator had a rougher experience in March 2025. Modo reported that NESO recorded an eclipse-induced forecasting miss of 1.65 GW that month, a precedent traders will be weighing as the 7pm window approaches. Demand forecasting is imprecise at every horizon; an event like this makes the imprecision visible fast.3
The continental picture adds scale. ENTSO-E, which co-ordinates European transmission system operators, estimates Wednesday's (2026-08-12) eclipse could reduce solar output by up to 9.7 GW across Europe, according to Modo. That is a concentrated intra-hour shift, even if the shadow's passage lasts only minutes across any given grid zone.3
DNV's Solcast offered a milder reading. Solcast's Hugh Crutcher put the UK's total irradiance loss at only 1%, a figure shared with Spain, Portugal and France. The daily average is not the problem. The loss is compressed into the 7pm to 7:30pm window, when demand remains elevated from the ongoing heatwave and the sun is not yet setting fast enough to blur the forecasting picture.3
Analysts told Montel the eclipse is unlikely to produce a supply squeeze but could generate short-lived price volatility. NESO's public position is that there is no risk to customer supplies. But issuing a market alert in summer is uncommon for Britain's grid operator; such warnings are more typical in winter, when demand peaks and daylight is scarce. The summer issuance signals that headroom is tighter than normal.2,4,1
Gas-fired generators are the most likely swing provider in the Balancing Mechanism. During a supply warning on Friday (2026-06-26), when soaring European temperatures put networks under pressure, LCP Delta data showed gas-fired generators earned around £10 million in Balancing Mechanism revenue between Monday (2026-06-22) and Thursday (2026-06-25). A short, sharp supply gap in the 7pm window creates conditions for dispatchable capacity to earn significant ancillary service revenue in a narrow timeframe.1
The 700 MW gap in NESO's demand forecast, combined with a heatwave sustaining load above seasonal norms, leaves less room for error entering the eclipse window. The March 2025 miss of 1.65 GW is the number the market will hold against NESO's contingency planning if the sky clears over Britain before 7pm on Wednesday (2026-08-12).3
