Asia Demand Note, Tuesday, 11 August 2026 Headline: Southern Australian heating demand is running 12–13% below normal as a sequence of cross-Tasman fronts keeps the southeast mild, while Japan's Pacific High retreats enough to pull Tokyo cooling demand 20 degree-days under its August benchmark. --- Japan The Pacific High, which ordinarily anchors deep over the western Pacific by mid-August and drives persistent southerly fetch across Honshu, has backed westward and weakened at the margins. The atmospheric outcome is a subtly less aggressive summer heat regime, not a cold surge, not a baiu remnant, simply a high that has lost some grip. The Arctic Oscillation at -0.35 and the PNA at -0.17 both point to mild downstream troughing in the mid-latitudes, which is keeping afternoon temperatures across the major urban demand centres from reaching the highs that August normally delivers. Tokyo's CDD15 accumulation sits at 129.6 against a seasonal normal of 150.0, a deficit of 20.4 degree-days, the most pronounced underrun in the model run. The directional signal is clear: aircon load is arriving more slowly than JEPX Tokyo evening peak pricing tends to assume at this point in the season. The move in CDDs day-on-day, from 120.35 to 129.6, reflects continued accumulation, the heat is still there, August is August, but the pace is restrained. Chubu and Kansai tell the same story. Chubu's CDD15 at 143.85 is 12.6 degree-days short of normal; Kansai at 153.5 is 13.9 short. Both registered meaningful day-on-day gains (Chubu +10.9, Kansai +9.25), so the thermal clock is running forward, just at a subdued cadence. The El Niño signal is not trivial here. Nino3.4 at +3.10 is firmly in moderate-to-strong El Niño territory, and a warm central Pacific has historically meant a more variable Pacific High over Japan rather than a locked-in summer amplifier. That inconsistency is showing up in the anomaly stack: no zone is severely cold, none is severely hot. The regime flag is BENIGN, and the degree-day path supports that characterisation. Evening residential and commercial load across Tokyo, Chubu, and Kansai will remain material, mid-summer accumulations in the 130–155 range are not trivial, but the deficit to normal keeps a ceiling on any dramatic demand acceleration through the near-term window. --- Australia The southeast is the story. Victoria's HDD15 at 92.5 sits 12.2 degree-days below a normal of 104.75, and South Australia at 77.65 is 13.0 degree-days under its 90.7 benchmark. Both are tracking away from their seasonal norms in the same direction, which points to a regional mechanism rather than localised noise. Cross-Tasman and Southern Ocean frontal systems, shaped in part by the SAM index sitting at -0.64, a negative phase that shifts the westerly wind belt equatorward and drives more frontal activity into the southern continent, are delivering cloud cover and above-average temperatures to Victoria and South Australia through the mid-winter period. The effect is suppressed space-heating load relative to what NEM operators would ordinarily price into the August forward curve. New South Wales reinforces the picture. HDD15 at 58.35 versus a normal of 66.58 represents an 8.2 degree-day shortfall, and CDD accumulation is essentially zero, consistent with a state in mild late-winter mode rather than any early-spring warmth. The day-on-day NSW reading did slip from 64.35 to 58.35, a directional easing that aligns with the frontal influence pushing northward. Queensland is the outlier: HDD15 at 28.3 is running 5.9 degree-days above its 22.44 normal, a modest positive anomaly that reflects the subtropical winter pattern holding drier and clearer inland conditions. Queensland's CDD accumulation ticked up from zero to 2.15, well below its normal 7.4, meaning daytime cooling demand there remains subdued. The IOD at +0.23 is marginally positive, the warm western Indian Ocean pole is not yet strong enough to drive significant rainfall suppression into southern Australia, but it bears watching if it strengthens toward +0.5 and beyond. At current magnitude it is background noise. The dominant southern Australia signal is the SAM-frontal complex keeping Victoria and South Australia mild, which places downward pressure on residential gas and electric heating load through the NEM's southern nodes. --- What to Watch The first thing to track is whether Tokyo's daily CDD accumulation rate accelerates toward the 10–12 degree-day per day pace needed to close the 20-degree deficit before the tail of August, specifically what the next GFS and ECMWF runs show for Pacific High extension over the Kanto Plain through the 15–18 August window. The second is the SAM index: at -0.64 it is already negative and driving the mild southern Australian pattern, but any further deterioration toward -1.0 or below would deepen the Victorian and South Australian HDD shortfall and extend the heating-load suppression that the current model run is already capturing.
