India's energy spending surge, led by solar and oil refining, arrives as Middle East supply disruptions accelerate a global rethink on energy security.
India's energy investment is on track to hit $170 billion in 2026, a record high driven by solar installations and oil refining expansion, the International Energy Agency said in its World Energy Investment 2026 report published in late May (2026-05-28). The figure caps a five-year run in which total energy investment in India has grown at an average of 11% per year, according to the IEA.1
The context matters. The IEA framed the report against what it called the largest global energy security crisis the world has ever faced, triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz — a reset in energy strategy it likened to the oil shocks of the 1970s.
