Two next-generation geothermal developers posted updates in July that move past announcements into measurable drilling progress, and the projects are starting to undercut nuclear on levelized cost, according to Oilprice.com. The Trump administration continues pushing domestic energy additions through funding vehicles and executive orders aimed at grid reliability and AI-driven demand growth.6 Skeptics will note the gap between projection and reality. Geothermal remains a tiny sector, and Quaise's approach requires proving that millimeter-wave drilling can work economically at scale, not just in the lab. The company has yet to deliver a commercial plant, and Project Obsidian's 2030 target leaves room for slippage.3,4 The funding structure also deserves scrutiny. Quaise announced only the first tranche of its Series B, leaving the total round size undisclosed. That partial disclosure suggests the company may still be courting additional strategic investors, with JERA's participation potentially serving as a signal to other Asian utilities.5 Japan's geothermal push comes against a backdrop of broader regional activity. Baseload Power Taiwan and CPC Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding in June to accelerate geothermal development across Taiwan, with initial focus on the Tuchang project in Yilan County. Superhot geothermal's promise of firm, dispatchable baseload power could eventually compete with gas-fired generation in markets like Japan, which relies heavily on LNG imports. But at 250 MW, Project Obsidian is a rounding error in any regional supply picture, and the 2030 startup date means no near-term displacement.4 The more immediate signal is in Japan's procurement behavior. JERA's venture investment and Idemitsu's potential equity stake suggest Japanese utilities are hedging their LNG exposure by taking early positions in next-generation geothermal.
