Asia Demand Note, Sunday 9 August 2026 Headline: Queensland is the single outlier across both markets, carrying a +6.0 HDD anomaly against a backdrop where every other zone runs below or at normal, the NEM's heating demand skews north while the NEM's south and Japan alike sit in mild-deficit territory. --- Japan The Pacific High continues to govern the synoptic setup across Honshu, but its grip is looser than seasonal average would suggest. All three monitored zones are running CDD15 below normal: Tokyo at 133.35 against a normal of 149.99, Chubu at 148.9 against 158.99, and Kansai at 157.9 against 169.62. The anomalies are not trivial, Tokyo's shortfall of 16.6 CDD units is the widest of the three, suggesting that whatever Pacific High influence is sustaining summer heat over the Kanto Plain, it is delivering at reduced intensity relative to what the calendar should produce. The Arctic Oscillation at -0.35 and the PNA at -0.17 are both slightly negative, a configuration that tends to allow some residual middle-latitude disturbance energy to penetrate southward rather than being fully blocked poleward. Neither index has moved far enough into negative territory to signal a meaningful cold-surge event, no Siberian High reinforcement is indicated here, but the slight negative tilt in the AO helps explain why the Pacific High is not fully asserting the ridge strength that would push temperatures, and therefore cooling degree-days, toward or above normal. The Niño 3.4 index at +2.80 places the tropical Pacific in active El Niño territory. Historically for August, this state tends to be associated with suppressed convection over the Maritime Continent and a somewhat more expansive Pacific High, yet the CDD path on all three zones is deficient. The implication is that secondary synoptic features, possibly enhanced cloud cover or a weakened subtropical jet, are partially offsetting the El Niño influence on surface temperatures. CDD accumulation has ticked upward from previous reads, Tokyo from 131.6 to 133.35, Kansai from 156.6 to 157.9, so the summer cooling load is building, but at a rate that trails the seasonal norm. The Japan regime flag reads BENIGN. Absent any tripwire breach, JEPX evening peak exposure remains conditioned on whether the incremental CDD path can close its gap to normal over the coming days. Aircon load is the primary mechanism to watch: residential and commercial cooling demand in the Tokyo and Kansai service areas drives evening peak materially, and a 16.6-unit Tokyo CDD deficit relative to normal represents cooling demand running meaningfully short of what mid-August should produce. --- Australia The NEM picture is fragmented in a way that reflects a post-frontal environment across the southeast. Victoria is the clearest signal: HDD15 has dropped sharply from 102.15 to 95.75, and the anomaly at -9.0 against a normal of 104.73 indicates that whatever cross-Tasman front was driving heating load earlier in the week has retreated or weakened. South Australia follows a similar trajectory, HDD easing from 83.3 to 85.8, with a modest -3.3 anomaly. New South Wales is also running 6.8 HDD below normal, down from 63.2 to 58.9. The southern and southeastern states are collectively mild for August, a pattern consistent with a positive IOD state (+0.30) that tends to sustain drier, warmer subsidence over southern Australia by suppressing moisture from the Indian Ocean. Queensland is the divergence. HDD at 28.05 with a +6.0 anomaly, and a previous read of 30.95 suggests the state has been consistently running above normal for heating load across the recent window. A modest 0.35 CDD reading against a normal of 6.64 underscores that while the interior is cooler than it should be for tropical Queensland, the anomaly is skewed toward heating rather than any warmth excess. The SAM at -0.64 places the Southern Annular Mode in a negative phase, which tends to allow mid-latitude frontal systems to push equatorward rather than tracking at higher latitudes, this mechanism can deliver anomalous cool air into Queensland's southern margins, and the HDD excess is consistent with that dynamic. The AU regime is also flagged BENIGN. No degree-day tripwires have been cleared across the NEM. The divergence between a subdued southeast and an above-normal Queensland on the heating side represents the most textured regional signal in the current packet, but neither individually nor collectively do the zones push outside normal variability. --- What to Watch The AO at -0.35 bears watching: if subsequent model runs show a deepening into -1.0 or below, the risk of enhanced mid-latitude disturbance intrusion across Japan increases, which could steepen the CDD shortfall rather than allow it to recover toward normal. For Australia, the Queensland HDD anomaly at +6.0 sits as the clearest above-normal signal in the entire packet; watch whether the next run shows the previous value (30.95) continuing to decay toward 28.05 and below, sustained above-normal heating load there is the NEM's most active demand story right now, even in a benign overall regime.
