Texas Battery Storage Tops 30 GWh as ERCOT Absorbs Record Summer Peak
Nearly 30 GWh of Texas grid storage is being stressed after ERCOT's July 22 peak load hit 91 GW, topping the prior all-time record by 6%.
Texas holds nearly 30 GWh of grid-scale battery storage, the Solar Energy Industries Association reported on Thursday (2026-08-06), as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas navigates a summer that has pushed hourly peak demand beyond any level the grid has previously recorded.5
ERCOT's hourly peak load reached 91 GW on July 22 (2026-07-22), surpassing the previous record of 85.5 GW set on August 10, 2023, by 6%, according to EIA data released Monday (2026-08-03). The peak came at 6:00 p.m. CT during a heat wave. Natural gas provided 48% of generation at that moment, solar 32%. EIA said the July 22 record could be exceeded again before summer ends if Texas experiences another significant heat event.4
The 6:00 p.m. timing is operationally significant. Solar output drops sharply at that hour while residential and commercial cooling loads stay elevated. Storage is built to cover that window. Texas recorded an all-time peak solar reading of 34.4 GW at 12:40 p.m. on May 13 (2026-05-13), a midday surplus that battery capacity is designed to capture and shift into the evening ramp.2,4
Spring set multiple renewable output records across ERCOT. Wind hit a new high of nearly 29 GW at 11:50 p.m. on May 17 (2026-05-17), and combined renewable output reached almost 48 GW on May 14 (2026-05-14) at 3:15 p.m., Canary Media reported. But none of those records align with peak demand hours, which have consistently fallen in the late afternoon and early evening.2
Solar's trajectory in ERCOT is accelerating on the generation side. EIA's Annual Energy Outlook 2026 projects solar generation will reach 78 billion kilowatthours in ERCOT in 2026, against 60 billion kilowatthours for coal, making this the first year solar is expected to exceed coal in absolute generation on the Texas grid.1
Data center load growth is reinforcing demand nationally. EIA's AEO2026 estimates servers accounted for 7% of US commercial sector electricity consumption in 2025, with that share projected to rise to 22%–33% of all commercial building electricity use by 2050. Server consumption alone is projected to reach between 446 billion and 818 billion kilowatthours by then, against a 2025 base that sits well below even the lower end of that range.1
New contracting structures are being built around Texas solar alongside the storage expansion. A 110-MW standalone solar project in Hill County, Texas, began commercial operations in the week of July 27 (2026-07-27), with part of its output contracted to video game subscribers through a platform offered by SuperPower, a California-based company. The project is expected to generate 280,000 MWh annually. Its smallest individual contract covered just 1,000 MWh per year.5
SuperPower said 10 MW of solar can offset about 125 million hours of gaming annually. Cris Eugster noted that projects like the Hill County arrangement require reliable long-term offtake regardless of buyer identity. "Every place is unique and different, but what is common is those projects need long-term offtake to help stand up," he said. Utility Dive reported the arrangement points to broader offtake adoption beyond the hyperscalers, utilities and large corporates that currently dominate the market.5
US storage deployment is running at record pace. The United States added 3.3 GW and 8.4 GWh of energy storage in the first quarter of 2026, according to Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association, with utility-scale, residential, and commercial segments all setting quarterly records.3
Southwest Power Pool recorded its own demand peak of 57.9 GW on July 27 (2026-07-27), per EIA data, showing summer heat stress extending beyond ERCOT's borders. For the Texas grid specifically, EIA flagged on Monday (2026-08-03) that July 22's record may not stand as the season's high. If temperatures spike again, ERCOT faces that demand level with 30 GWh of storage and a solar fleet capable of 34.4 GW at midday. Gas has run close to 50% of generation at recent peaks. How storage handles the midday-to-evening transfer at that scale has not yet been fully tested.4
