Avaada secures $1.3bn for 2.15 GW Indian renewables buildout
Indian developer's bank financing for hybrid and solar projects signals continued state-buyer appetite for firm renewable capacity.
India's Avaada Group has secured roughly $1.3bn in financing for a 2,150 MW renewable energy portfolio, with State Bank of India leading the funding for projects that combine hybrid and utility-scale solar capacity. The package covers 1.35 GW of hybrid projects and 800 MW of solar earmarked for two state distribution utilities, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited.7
That matters for Asian power markets because the projects are structured to address the reliability complaint that has dogged Indian renewables: the 1,350 MW hybrid portion pairs solar with wind to firm up supply for MSEDCL, while the solar-only tranche runs under long-term power purchase agreements with GUVNL and MSEDCL. The buildout will add more than 3,000 MW of solar capacity and 450 MW of wind across Gujarat and Maharashtra.7
The financing lands as Indian discoms face mounting pressure to sign new capacity. Power demand growth has outstripped generation additions in several states, and hybrids are emerging as the procurement vehicle that lets buyers avoid the intermittency risk of standalone solar while still meeting renewable purchase obligations.7
Avaada's deal is one signal among several that clean energy capital is moving despite policy uncertainty. The state-level focus was already visible in Arizona, where voters in the week of 2026-04-06 selected a slate of candidates known as the Clean Energy Team to run the Salt River Project, the state's largest public utility. For Indian power markets, the Avaada close is the more concrete signal. State distribution companies signing long-term PPAs for hybrid capacity are effectively underwriting the next wave of domestic solar and wind manufacturing demand, and the financing terms from State Bank of India set a benchmark for other developers chasing similar hybrid tenders. The watch item is execution — whether the 450 MW of wind actually gets built on schedule, since wind has historically been the lagging component of Indian hybrid projects.7
