Asia Demand Note, Sunday, 2 August 2026 Headline: Kansai carries the only meaningful positive heat anomaly across both markets, with a CDD surplus of +16.6 against normal while every other zone sits flat or below, a summer that is running cooler than expected on both sides of the Pacific. --- Japan The dominant synoptic actor over the Japanese archipelago this August is the Pacific High, which typically sprawls westward in midsummer and locks in sustained heat across Honshu. What the current run shows is a high that has established itself but without the pronounced inland pressure gradient that drives the most intense Tokyo summer peaks. The Arctic Oscillation is sitting positive at +1.23, which tends to keep polar air penned to the north and block cold surges, so there is no Siberian High intrusion to discuss, and the baiu front is long gone from the mainland. The atmosphere is in a stable, warm configuration, but the warmth is unevenly distributed. Tokyo's accumulated CDD15 stands at 144.5 against a seasonal normal of 155.4, a deficit of 10.9 degree-days. That is a meaningful shortfall: the capital's airconditioning load is running below where climatology would place it for this point in the summer. The prior-period reading was 141.6, so the accumulation continues, but the gap to normal has not closed. Chubu is essentially at par, with a CDD15 of 165.2 against a normal of 165.5, statistically indistinguishable from average and showing negligible change in the anomaly signal. Kansai is the outlier. A CDD15 of 189.9 against a normal of 173.2 represents a +16.6 surplus, the only zone in either market registering a genuinely elevated heat demand signal. The prior-period reading was 184.9, so the anomaly is building, not dissipating. The mechanism is local: Kansai sits in a basin geography that amplifies stored urban heat under high-pressure ridging, and when the Pacific High extends a strong western ridge toward the Sea of Japan coast, the Osaka–Kyoto corridor accumulates degree-days faster than coastal Tokyo. That dynamic appears active. JEPX Kansai area prices are sensitive to evening peak airconditioning draw in exactly these conditions, particularly when the CDD surplus compounds over successive days as it is doing here. The broader JP regime call is BENIGN, no tripwire has been crossed, and the degree-day path for the nation as a whole sits inside normal variability. Nino3.4 is at +2.50, a moderate El Niño signal that historically tilts Japanese summers toward above-normal warmth but with high regional variance; the Tokyo deficit and Kansai surplus together illustrate that variance in real time. --- Australia The Southern Hemisphere winter pattern is in firm control across the NEM. The SAM index is running strongly positive at +2.79, which is the defining large-scale feature for southeastern Australia in the current window. A positive SAM pushes the westerly storm track southward, away from the continental interior, and tends to leave Victoria and South Australia in a relatively dry, mild configuration rather than exposed to active frontal sequences. Cross-Tasman fronts that might otherwise drive cold-air surges into New South Wales are suppressed or deflected, and the interior heat dome mechanism is seasonally irrelevant in August. New South Wales is the most notable zone. HDD15 accumulation stands at 80.75 against a normal of 69.5, an anomaly of +11.2 degree-days. The prior read was 81.15, so the pace has moderated slightly but the surplus remains intact. Winter heating load in New South Wales, gas and resistance electric, tracks HDD accumulation closely, and this surplus is the clearest demand-side signal in the AU dataset. Queensland shows a +6.5 HDD anomaly at 31.35 against a normal of 24.8, though the prior read of 37.35 indicates the state has cooled relative to the recent window; the trend there is softening. Victoria, the NEM's most interconnected region and often the swing zone for the southern grid, is running almost exactly at normal: HDD15 of 108.1 against a normal of 109.1, a -1.0 anomaly. South Australia is slightly below normal at -5.0. Neither region is generating a directional heating demand signal. The IOD is lightly positive at +0.38, not yet in territory that materially alters Southern Ocean moisture advection, but a value to track if it extends further into positive phase, which historically tightens rainfall and amplifies winter heating demand across southeastern states. The AU regime call, like Japan's, is BENIGN. --- What to Watch The Kansai CDD trajectory is the primary thing to follow into the coming week. The anomaly is already +16.6 and building run-on-run; if the next model cycle extends the Pacific High ridge toward western Honshu through mid-August, the surplus will compound and the load signal will intensify. Watch for the 500 hPa geopotential height analysis over 130–135°E, sustained positive anomalies there are the mechanism that keeps Kansai's CDD outpacing Tokyo's. For Australia, track whether the SAM index sustains above +2.0 into the next week. The positive SAM is presently suppressing frontal activity and keeping the southern grid in its benign heating-load window. A drop toward neutral would change the synoptic story for Victoria and potentially reinforce the New South Wales HDD surplus by delivering colder, moister air masses from the southwest rather than the current pattern of deflected fronts.
