LNG liquefaction equipment market set for 8.2% CAGR as China, India lead demand surge
Equipment suppliers are poised for a decade of growth as US export expansion and Asian import build-out drive a projected $55.9bn market by 2035.
The global LNG liquefaction equipment market is projected to grow from $25.4 billion in 2025 to $55.9 billion by 2035, an 8.2% compound annual rate, according to a May 29 (2026-05-29) analysis by Future Market Insights.2
The equipment forecast tracks a record year for LNG trade. Global LNG volumes rose 6.3% in 2025 to 437 million tonnes, the International Gas Union reported on July 7 (2026-07-07), with the United States adding 22.3 million tonnes year-on-year and reclaiming the top exporter spot at 110.74 million tonnes. Qatar exported 81.51 million tonnes, Australia 80.32 million, and Russia 30.52 million despite cutting shipments by almost 3 million tonnes.5
The equipment market's growth is concentrated in fewer places than the trade numbers suggest. China is projected to grow at 11.1% annually, India at 10.3%, and Germany at 9.4%, according to the Future Market Insights data, while the US sits at 7.8% and Japan lags at 6.2%. German and UK growth of 7.0% reflects European import terminal build-out, a direct consequence of the region's post-2022 pivot away from Russian pipeline gas.1
US dominance of supply growth is the backdrop. Forbes reported on July 19 (2026-07-19) that the US supplied 93% of global LNG export growth in 2025, a concentration that leaves the market exposed to Gulf Coast weather, feedgas constraints, or permitting delays. Fixed infrastructure locks in capacity, but cargoes remain redirectable in transit; when European prices rise, shipments that might have gone to Asia swing toward European terminals instead. That flexibility provides energy security but compresses Asian spot availability, a dynamic traders have priced into the JKM-TTF spread repeatedly this year.6,7
The equipment forecast assumes that train-building keeps pace. Plant manufacturers are expected to account for 58.4% of market revenue in 2025, the dominant category, which implies order books are still weighted toward full-scale liquefaction trains rather than modular or floating units. Mid-scale plants are gaining ground because they offer lower capital requirements, faster execution timelines, and flexible output for regional demand, the analysis notes.1,2
Yet demand-side signals are not uniformly supportive. Spot JKM prices show bearish pressure on both demand and supply drivers, a contrarian signal against the bullish consensus weight of 0.528. Asian buyers may be trimming near-term spot purchases even as their governments plan import infrastructure. Soft near-term Asian demand does not invalidate a 10-year equipment outlook, but it does raise questions about the pace of final investment decisions on new trains.1,2
Shell's LNG Outlook 2026 projects global demand reaching nearly 700 million tonnes annually by 2050, up roughly 65% from 2025 levels. That trajectory requires not just more trains but more efficient ones, since liquefaction is the most energy-intensive step in the LNG chain. Compressor reliability, cooling efficiency, and reduced downtime are the selling points equipment vendors lean on.4
The supply-side picture has another layer. US export growth of 22.3 million tonnes in 2025 dwarfs the combined additions from Qatar at 4.3 million tonnes, Malaysia at 1.1 million, Angola at 1.1 million, and Nigeria at 1 million. If US growth stalls, the equipment market's North American pillar weakens and Asian buyers become more dependent on Qatari and Australian expansion plans, which carry longer lead times.5
European demand is the swing factor the forecast hedges around. Germany's projected 9.4% equipment growth rate pairs with the country's ongoing construction of regasification terminals, but those facilities are import, not liquefaction, assets. The equipment market's German exposure is therefore indirect, tied to the broader European push for diversified supply rather than to German export capacity.1
INEOS signed its first LNG supply agreement with Marubeni on June 3 (2026-06-03) to deliver cargoes to Asian markets, a sign that new Atlantic basin suppliers are seeking long-term Asian offtake. That kind of contract anchors financing for new liquefaction capacity, which in turn feeds the equipment order book.3
Timing is the unresolved risk. Equipment forecasts compound smoothly, but LNG project sanctioning moves in waves tied to price expectations. JKM spot closed Friday (2026-08-01) at $21.45/MMBtu while ICE Endex TTF front-month settled at €59.05/MWh, leaving the arbitrage between basins wide enough to support new supply. Whether that spread holds through the next 24 months of project decisions will determine if the 8.2% CAGR is a floor or a ceiling.2,1
