The marine layer influence and slightly displaced high-pressure axis are keeping the Kanto coastal strip cooler than the interior, and aircon load in the Tokyo service area remains subdued relative to where the calendar says it should be. JEPX Tokyo evening peak dynamics follow the aircon load closely in August, and a below-normal CDD trajectory is the relevant frame here. The picture shifts when you move inland. The teleconnection backdrop is permissive rather than forcing. The Arctic Oscillation at +1.23 keeps the polar vortex contained and reduces the chance of a cold-air intrusion disturbing the Pacific High's position. The Victorian grid's gas and dispatchable generation mix responds to this kind of steady HDD accumulation with elevated morning and evening peaks, and the trajectory here shows no sign of rolling over. South Australia sits at 96.95 against a normal of 93.0, anomaly +4.0, though down from 103.95 previously, that step-back warrants attention, as it may reflect a brief moderation ahead of a renewed push, or a smoothing artifact as the weekly accumulation resets. New South Wales is the other region to watch. HDD accumulation stands at 82.25 against a normal of 70.3, an anomaly of +12.0, advancing from 80.9. That is the largest percentage departure from normal of any NEM region and represents sustained residential and commercial heating load above what the grid typically prices in for this time of year. Queensland's heating anomaly at +2.2 is smaller in absolute terms, though the prior reading of 42.0 pulling back to 27.7 in the current run reflects the expected sub-tropical moderation. The IOD at +0.38 is in weakly positive territory, which in austral winter typically supports drier-than-normal conditions across southern Australia, consistent with the ridge-dominated pattern the positive SAM is sustaining. Cooling demand is negligible across all NEM regions, as expected in August; this is purely a heating-load story. The regime classification is benign at the aggregate level, but the NSW anomaly at +12.0 HDD above normal is the most elevated regional departure anywhere in this data packet. --- What to Watch Two things deserve attention at the next model run. First, whether Kansai's CDD accumulation continues to advance at the current rate of roughly 1.6 per run, if that trajectory holds, the anomaly against normal will continue widening and the region's heat signal will move further from the benign baseline. Second, the South Australia HDD reading, which pulled back sharply from 103.95 to 96.95; the next run will clarify whether this is genuine frontal moderation or a transient smoothing effect, and the direction of that revision carries implications for the southern NEM heating stack heading into next week.
