France's Nuclear Fleet Loses 6.4 GW to Heat as EDF Plans Climate Adaptation Upgrades
EDF has acknowledged climate change could eliminate 8 TWh of French power output by 2050, as this summer's heat drives repeated curtailments at river-cooled reactors.
French power day-ahead settled at €123.73/MWh on Friday (2026-07-31), while the German power front-month rose 3.11% to €130.31/MWh on the same session, as recurring heat-related nuclear curtailments kept European electricity markets under pressure. Both prices reflect a summer in which EDF has been repeatedly forced to cut output at river-cooled reactors.6,5
France generates roughly 70% of its electricity from nuclear, making it the central node in Western European cross-border supply. When the fleet is constrained, the effect propagates quickly to German baseload and to UK and Spanish import costs. Nuclear availability is not a French domestic concern alone.6
The scale of that problem sharpened on Monday (2026-07-13), when EDF cut 6.4 GW of nuclear generation as a prolonged heatwave drove river temperatures high enough to restrict reactor cooling capacity. That 6.4 GW equalled roughly 14% of France's overall morning power demand, according to Oilprice.com.6
Even so, RTE data indicated France remained a net exporter on that date, shipping over 10 GW to neighbouring markets. The country's nuclear surplus provides a buffer — but one that narrows quickly when heat forces multiple units offline simultaneously.6
The July cuts built on disruptions that had already accumulated earlier in the summer. On Wednesday (2026-06-24), Montel reported that around 3% of France's available nuclear capacity was offline, one day after the country recorded what was described as its hottest day on record. EDF delayed a planned 1.1 GW reduction at its St Alban 2 reactor on the Rhone, rescheduling the cut to the 03:00-16:30 CET window on Thursday (2026-06-25).4
Rising river temperatures also forced EDF to shut two reactors outright as a precautionary environmental measure, Yahoo News reported on Thursday (2026-06-25). The closures were described as temporary, but the frequency of heat-driven outages across June and July makes the pattern harder to treat as exceptional.7
EDF now says climate change could put almost 2%, or 8 TWh, of French power output at risk by 2050, and announced plans on Tuesday (2026-06-02) to adapt both nuclear operations and hydropower infrastructure to cope, Montel reported. Eight terawatt-hours is a modest fraction of current output. But that estimate assumes warming tracks the central projection; if temperatures overshoot, the exposure rises.2
EDF's half-year report shows French nuclear output rose to 373 TWh in 2025 from 362 TWh in 2024, driven partly by the Grand Carénage maintenance programme, with the group's total output target set at 520 TWh. Hydropower — equally dependent on river flow and temperature conditions — contributed just 43 TWh in France in 2025, down from 51 TWh in 2024, the sharpest recent illustration of the climate sensitivity embedded in river-dependent generation across the fleet.3
EDF's adaptation programme targets hydropower infrastructure availability alongside nuclear climate-proofing, but the half-year report frames this as a multi-year effort rather than an imminent fix. Investments being planned now will take years to deploy across 57 reactors and multiple hydro installations.3,8
The demand side complicates matters further. On Wednesday (2026-05-20), EDF told investors that electrification was "imperative" in the wake of an energy shock it linked to the Iran war, and set out plans to grow French power demand by 5.5 TWh per year, Montel reported. New heat pumps and electric trucks were cited as contributors, with EDF offering grid-connected industrial sites to attract new load. Pushing demand higher into summers that are getting structurally hotter widens the margin that adaptation spending is designed to protect.1
ICE Endex TTF front-month gas was flat on Friday (2026-07-31) at €58.16/MWh, suggesting European gas markets are not yet pricing a sustained nuclear-driven power shortfall into generation demand. If August heat extends the curtailment pattern seen across June and July, gas burn for power would climb and TTF would respond. EDF's long-dated adaptation commitments provide no protection against that exposure before next summer's heat tests the fleet again.6,2
