Record El Niño Intensification Sets Up Above-Normal Temperatures Across the Northern Hemisphere Through Autumn, With Gas Demand Implications Emerging for Q4

The dominant force shaping the next three months is straightforward: El Niño is strengthening fast, and NOAA CPC puts an 81% probability on a very strong event during October–December 2026, one that would rank among the largest in the observational record back to 1950. The weekly Niño-3.4 index reached +1.2°C on the latest reading (Niño-1+2 at +2.7°C), and a recent downwelling Kelvin wave has deepened the eastern Pacific thermocline further, building subsurface heat that will sustain and amplify the surface signal through autumn. NOAA's NMME ensemble gives 97% odds that El Niño persists through early spring 2027. That confidence level is rare and demands attention.
The teleconnection picture complicates the near-term view. The Arctic Oscillation printed +1.23 and the NAO at +0.58 through late June, both in positive phase, which typically suppresses European blocking and sustains mild westerly flow. But the 16-day GEFS ensemble tells a transitional story: the AO rises from +0.61 now toward +1.89 by the final week of the forecast period, while the NAO drifts slightly negative in the middle of the window before recovering. This is not a pattern shift toward blocking, it is a continuation of the positive regime with modest mid-range wobble. European heating demand remains structurally suppressed through August.
The MJO is weak at Phase 7 with amplitude only 0.3, well below the 1.0 threshold for meaningful teleconnection forcing. It is not a market-relevant driver at this moment. The QBO sits in easterly phase at -1.5 m/s at 50 hPa. Easterly QBO in combination with a strong El Niño tends to favor a disrupted stratospheric polar vortex during the following winter, a Sudden Stratospheric Warming risk for December–February that traders pricing winter gas should not ignore.
6-Week Temperature Trajectory
Across Northwest Europe, the EC46 ensemble is cooling on its own seasonal trajectory but the broader picture is one of persistent above-normal anomalies relative to climatology. London runs week-one at 22.1°C with a tight 1.5°C spread, high confidence in warm conditions, before the ensemble widens appreciably in weeks three and four (15.7°C to 22.5°C). Frankfurt peaks this week at 25.3°C before trending down to 18.0°C by week six, but the ensemble's warm tail remains elevated: 48.8% probability of above 1SD anomaly in the coming weeks per ECMWF regional data, with 14.4% probability exceeding 2SD. That is not a marginal signal.
Paris follows a similar trajectory, 25.9°C now, tapering to 19.7°C by week six, with ensemble spread widening substantially from week three onward, indicating meaningful uncertainty whether the late-August cooldown arrives sharply or is delayed.
In the Americas, Houston holds near 30°C with a narrow 1.8°C spread throughout the six-week window, the tightest signal in the dataset and a strong confidence call for sustained above-normal heat demand in ERCOT. New York is more volatile: week-two jumps to 25.5°C with a 6°C spread (22.6–28.5°C), flagging genuine uncertainty. The ensemble then settles back toward 22–23°C with moderate spread through weeks four to six.
Australia is in winter, but Adelaide and Melbourne both show a gradual warming trend through weeks five and six (Melbourne 11.9°C with an 8.8–15.4°C range), which matters for LNG spot demand trajectory heading toward the Southern Hemisphere spring.
Regional Seasonal Outlooks
Europe. This is where agency agreement is strongest and most actionable. ECMWF's seasonal bulletin published July 10 forecasts temperatures "more likely than not to be well-above average, exceeding the 80th percentile of the historical distribution, virtually across the continent, throughout the forecast period", a broad, high-confidence warm call. The bulletin also signals wetter-than-average conditions in southern Europe in early autumn and central Europe in late autumn and early winter. DWD's seasonal output for August through October leans similarly warm for central Europe, though with slightly less extreme probability weighting than ECMWF. Met Office and Météo-France seasonal products are broadly aligned on the above-normal temperature picture for Q3, though Météo-France shows somewhat wider uncertainty in precipitation over France's southwest. The net result: European cooling demand is structurally elevated through September, and early-winter gas demand builds on a base that is already warm, any SSW-driven cold shock in November or December would hit a storage-filled but demand-sensitive market.
East Asia. JMA's three-month outlook through October flags above-normal temperatures across Honshu and most of Japan, with a +0.8 to +1.2°C anomaly pattern consistent with El Niño teleconnection forcing. Korea Meteorological Administration signals similar above-normal conditions for the Korean Peninsula through the JAS period. China's CMA seasonal output shows above-normal temperatures across eastern China, which supports elevated cooling demand but may also suppress late-monsoon precipitation in the Yangtze basin, a power-sector hydro risk for late summer.
Russia. Roshydromet's seasonal products for Western Siberia through October show a mixed picture, near-normal to slightly above-normal temperatures, which is the weakest warm signal in the global ensemble. Critically, the Siberian cold risk for winter 2026–27 now attaches to the QBO-El Niño SSW interaction rather than any current cooling signal. Watch the polar vortex state in October as the first leading indicator.
South and Southeast Asia. ECMWF's seasonal bulletin is unambiguous: below-average precipitation over the Maritime Continent and southern Asia in August through October. For Indonesia, this is a dry season extension risk with direct biomass burning implications for regional air quality and coal demand. India's monsoon through late July has been tracking near-normal, but the suppression signal strengthens for August–September. JMA agrees on below-normal precipitation for maritime Southeast Asia in this period. This is one of the cleaner inter-agency consensus signals in the current set.
Americas. NOAA CPC's ASO outlook favors above-normal temperatures across most of the CONUS, with the highest probabilities concentrated in the Northwest and southwestern Texas. Precipitation forecasts show the El Niño fingerprint clearly: above-normal precipitation for the Southwest US, below-normal for the Pacific Northwest and Southern Plains. For Brazil, ECMWF shows above-average precipitation in southern South America for October through December, which is constructive for Paraná basin hydro recovery as you move into the Southern Hemisphere wet season. The Atlantic hurricane season setup under strong El Niño is historically suppressed in the Gulf and Atlantic basins, lower SSW shear, limiting energy infrastructure disruption risk in the near term.
Hydro & Storage
Nordic reservoir levels are running near five-year average after an active spring, which keeps Nordic power prices anchored and limits the Norwegian hydro call on TTF markets in the near term. Any deterioration from a dry August would shift that calculus by October. Brazil's Paraná system remains the critical swing, currently around 60% capacity heading into the dry season, but the ECMWF OND above-normal precipitation signal for southern South America is the most bullish hydro factor in the seasonal picture. If that signal verifies, Brazilian hydro power availability through Q1 2027 reduces LNG spot demand significantly.
EU gas storage is tracking above the five-year average, which removes acute winter supply panic but does not eliminate the Q4 price sensitivity that comes with a strong El Niño potentially delivering a late cold snap via SSW. Storage fullness buys time; it does not buy immunity from a January demand spike.
Strategic Positioning
- European power Q3 (Cal Aug–Sep contracts): EC and multi-agency consensus on well-above-normal temperatures through September supports continued elevated cooling demand. The positive AO suppressing blocking is the residual risk to this view, any unexpected positive AO breakdown bears watching against the GEFS 16-day guidance.
- TTF winter 2026–27 (Nov–Mar strip): The QBO easterly / strong El Niño combination historically raises SSW probability in December–January. Near-term storage comfort may keep the front of the winter strip capped, but the back end (Jan–Feb) deserves a premium relative to current carry pricing. Position for curve steepening rather than outright length.
- ERCOT power Sep–Oct: Houston's narrow-spread, high-confidence near-30°C trajectory for six weeks warrants staying long Texas power through September before the seasonal rolloff. Spread on this signal is the tightest in the entire EC46 dataset.
- Asian LNG spot Aug–Sep: Maritime Continent and southern Asia dry conditions drive industrial and residential power demand through the wet season suppression window. Japan and Korea's above-normal temperature outlook maintains restocking demand. LNG spot has a constructive seasonal setup through Q3.
- Brazil power / BRL commodity complex Q4: ECMWF's above-normal precipitation signal for southern South America in OND is the key counterweight. If Paraná reservoirs recover through November, thermal dispatch pressure eases and Brazilian power prices soften into year-end. Watch September reservoir trend as the leading indicator.
- Indonesian thermal coal Oct–Dec: A prolonged dry season via El Niño suppresses hydro output and raises thermal plant dispatch, historically supporting Indonesian coal demand. The Maritime Continent dry signal has broad multi-agency backing and is one of the cleaner calls in this outlook.
