Asia Demand Note, Monday, 28 July 2026 Japan's Pacific High is running hot across Chubu and Kansai at a combined intensity not seen this season, while Australia's winter baseline holds broadly within tolerance. --- Japan: Pacific High Dominance, Interior Regions Leading the Surge The headline signal for the JST open is unambiguous: Japan sits in a confirmed HEAT_SURGE regime, driven by a reinforced Pacific High locked over the archipelago. The 15-day accumulated CDD15 anomaly for the national grid-weighted basket stands at +18.0 above climatological norms, well above the +10.0 threshold that defines the regime. That number is being pulled upward by two zones in particular, and traders should read them in sequence. Kansai is the sharpest anomaly on the board. At CDD15 of 211.45 against a normal of 175.94, the region is running +35.5 above seasonal expectation. The prior reading was 199.9, meaning Kansai added 11.5 CDD units in a single model run, an acceleration, not a plateau. The mechanism is Pacific High ridge extension across the Kinki plain, which suppresses onshore sea breeze and traps heat in the Osaka-Kobe corridor overnight. Air-conditioning load on the Kansai grid is sensitive to exactly this configuration: sustained overnight warmth keeps baseload from recovering, and JEPX Kansai evening peak shapes accordingly. Chubu presents a similar picture, albeit at a slightly lower absolute level. CDD15 reached 193.95 against a normal of 169.32, an anomaly of +24.6. Notably, the prior reading was 195.7, so Chubu eased marginally, but that small softening is noise against a +24.6 departure from normal that has been building since mid-month. The Nagoya basin is one of Japan's most heat-amplified urban environments; when the Pacific High plants its axis overhead, industrial and residential cooling loads combine in ways that stress the Chubu grid during the 17:00–20:00 JST window. Tokyo, by comparison, is the relative laggard. CDD15 of 163 against a normal of 158.17 yields an anomaly of just +4.8. The prior was 158.15, confirming that Tokyo is warming into the pattern rather than leading it. Sea breezes off Tokyo Bay continue to moderate the capital's overnight temperature profile in a way that Nagoya and Osaka do not benefit from. Still, a positive anomaly is a positive anomaly: JEPX Tokyo evening peak remains sensitive to any nudge in the Pacific High's ridge axis. The teleconnection backdrop reinforces the heat bias. Nino3.4 at +2.50 places the equatorial Pacific firmly in El Niño territory, a state that historically correlates with Pacific High intensification over Japan during boreal summer. The Arctic Oscillation at +1.23 keeps the polar jet retracted northward, reducing the chance of a trough disruption that might break the high's grip. There is no cold-surge mechanism visible on the indices, the Siberian High is a winter feature, and nothing in the current AO or PNA (+0.07) configuration suggests anomalous cold advection. The plum front is long gone from central Honshu. This is a clean Pacific High summer heat event, and the departure anomalies in Chubu and Kansai reflect that. --- Australia: BENIGN Winter, Queensland the Standout Outlier Australia's winter profile is considerably quieter. The AU regime reads BENIGN, no tripwire cleared, degree-day paths broadly within normal variability. That said, the regional breakdown carries one exception worth monitoring. Queensland's HDD15 of 43.65 against a normal of 29.27 represents an anomaly of +14.4, the single largest departure anywhere on the AU board. The prior reading was 43.3, so the anomaly is essentially flat session-over-session, meaning this is not a fleeting spike but a sustained cold-air pooling event over the state's inland basin. Queensland is not a heavy heating-demand state by architecture, residential gas penetration is lower than in the southern NEM, but the +14.4 anomaly does affect overnight gas use and grid dispatch in the state's central and southern regions. The cross-Tasman flow pattern that has been directing modified polar air up through New South Wales and into Queensland appears to be persisting. South Australia shows a modest positive heating anomaly: HDD15 of 101.9 against a normal of 98.19, or +3.7. The prior was 91.35, so South Australia accelerated into the cold, a meaningful single-session step-up driven by the same frontal sequence that clipped the southern states. SA gas and wind interconnect dynamics bear watching if the anomaly continues to build. Victoria, paradoxically, is the warmest of the southern states relative to normal. HDD15 of 112.0 against a normal of 116.65 puts it at -4.6, meaning Melbourne and the Victorian interior are warmer than seasonal expectation. A positive SAM index at +2.79 tightens the southern annular westerlies, often steering frontal activity south of Tasmania and leaving Victoria in a drier, relatively mild airstream between systems. This suppresses peak heating-demand events in the NEM's largest gas-consuming state. New South Wales sits modestly above normal at +2.3, easing slightly from the prior 78.05 to 75.3. The IOD at +0.22 is weakly positive, not yet at levels associated with meaningful rainfall suppression for southeastern Australia, but worth tracking if it drifts higher into the August window. --- What to Watch The Pacific High's ridge axis position is the critical variable for Japan. Watch whether the 00Z GFS and ECMWF Monday runs maintain the ridge centered over central Honshu, if the axis nudges eastward toward the Pacific, Kansai's anomaly lead narrows; if it holds or drifts west, Chubu and Kansai accumulate further. For Australia, the Queensland HDD15 anomaly at +14.4 is the one figure that is running far enough from its normal to merit attention if it steps up again in the next model run, a further acceleration from the current level would be the first signal that the BENIGN regime designation deserves a second look.
