Waaree taps Suzlon for 201.6 MW wind farm as India’s renewable build-out accelerates India added 29 GW of renewable capacity in H1 2026, with wind orders now tracking solar’s lead. Waaree Group has contracted Suzlon Energy to install 64 S144 wind turbines for a 201.6 MW project in India, Suzlon said on Friday (2026-07-24). Each turbine has a 3.15 MW rating.4 The order extends a string of wind-turbine deals this year. GE Vernova signed an agreement with Powerica Limited earlier in June (2026-06-05) to supply 28 of its 3.8 MW–154m onshore turbines for the 100 MW Botad Wind Farm in Gujarat. That deal marked the first deployment of GE Vernova’s 3.8 MW model in the Indian market.4,3 India added nearly 29 GW of renewable energy capacity in the first half of 2026, according to JMK Research data cited by Asian Power on Friday (2026-07-10). Solar accounted for about 26 GW of that total, up 43% year on year. Wind contributed 2.9 GW.6 Wind has trailed solar for years in India, held back by land acquisition bottlenecks and state-level auction delays. The Waaree and GE Vernova orders suggest momentum is shifting. Turbine makers are now targeting projects that can meet grid-parity timelines without heavy subsidy dependence. India’s power demand is expected to rise roughly 6% a year through 2030, brokerage Centrum Institutional Research said in a report on Monday (2026-07-06). The additions are supported by renewable capacity, but the pace of wind deployment will need to accelerate to keep the mix balanced.5 Cheaper solar modules are a risk to that balance. Chinese solar reforms, including halted approvals and reduced subsidies, are expected to push down global panel prices, industry experts said in May (2026-05-20). That would make solar even cheaper relative to wind, potentially drawing investment away from the wind pipeline.1 India’s domestic solar-cell manufacturing capacity is only about 3 GW per year against average yearly demand of 20 GW, according to the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. The shortfall is filled from international markets, meaning a price drop in Chinese modules would hurt Indian panel makers first.1 Module prices in India could fall by up to 25%, rendering local equipment manufacturers uncompetitive, industry experts said. That dynamic creates a foreign-exchange exposure for developers: cheaper imports help project economics short-term but cap the returns of domestic solar factories.1 KPI Green Energy said on Tuesday (2026-05-26) it expects to raise up to $1 billion from an infrastructure investment trust backed by renewable energy assets, KP Group’s top executive told Reuters. That type of capital vehicle, if replicated, could fund the 1,500 MW of annual production capacity GE Vernova’s new turbine order implies.2,4 India has pledged to double renewable power capacity to 175 GW, a target second only to China. The next milestone is 40 GW of rooftop solar by 2022; Madhya Pradesh is now implementing a 26 MWp rooftop programme under a RESCO model.1 The cross-sector link from Indian demand growth to higher coal and oil prices is present but not dominant. Newcastle coal was at $120.40/t as of Friday (2026-07-24), flat on the session. Lower solar module prices reduce the incentive to keep coal-fired capacity running at peak load, but the absolute level of Indian demand growth still supports thermal imports near-term.1,6 What to watch: whether the Waaree-Suzlon order triggers follow-on commitments from other developers. Suzlon’s S144 is a proven turbine, but the broader test is whether India can sustain quarterly wind additions above 1.5 GW to match its 2030 trajectory. The next auction pipeline from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy will determine that.4,1
