Japan's summer heat surge deepens into the new week with cooling degree accumulation running more than 40 units above seasonal norms across all three mainland zones, confirming the Pacific High is locked in its dominant ridge position over the archipelago.

The synoptic driver is unambiguous. A robust Pacific High centred east of Honshu is suppressing frontal activity and channelling warm, humid air masses over the main population zones, a configuration that typically persists through late July in El Niño years. The Nino3.4 index at +2.30 places the basin firmly in El Niño forcing territory, which in the July climatology favours a stronger and more persistent western Pacific subtropical ridge, exactly the pattern the data reflect. The Arctic Oscillation at +1.23 reinforces the picture: a positive AO tends to suppress cold incursions from higher latitudes, removing the most likely candidate for any near-term pattern break.
The zone readings spell out the consequence. Chubu records the most extreme departure, with 15-day CDD accumulation at 215.7 against a seasonal normal of 158.9, an anomaly of +56.8. Kansai runs close behind at +47.7 above normal. Tokyo, where the absolute climatological base is lower, still shows +34.9. These are not marginal deviations; anomalies of this magnitude across all three zones simultaneously point to a broad-scale ridge rather than any localised urban or topographic effect. The day-over-day trajectory reinforces the directional read: Kansai CDD lifted from 209.3 to 215.7, Chubu from 214.0 to 215.7, and Tokyo from 182.9 to 186.1. The accumulation pace has not eased.
The demand-side mechanism is straightforward. In Japan's summer, air-conditioning load tracks CDD anomalies with high fidelity, particularly in the Chubu and Kansai industrial corridors where industrial process cooling adds to residential and commercial load. The JEPX system price during the evening peak window, roughly 18:00 to 21:00 JST, is the series most sensitive to this configuration. When the ridge holds and overnight temperatures remain elevated, load does not recover fully before the next morning peak, compressing the overnight dip that would otherwise afford dispatchable units time to cycle. The HEAT_SURGE regime designation is appropriate and the El Niño forcing suggests it remains the base case for the near term.
Australia
The picture across the NEM is materially different and, for the Monday open, the operative read is relative calm. The AU regime designation is BENIGN: no degree-day tripwire has been cleared, and the zone-level data bear this out. Victoria, the reference zone for the southern interconnected NEM, shows a 15-day HDD anomaly of just +2.3, essentially tracking normal. South Australia at +15.8 above normal and New South Wales at +17.6 above normal represent more meaningful cold-side departures, but in the July context these are consistent with a modestly amplified mid-latitude westerly flow rather than any anomalous blocking event.
The synoptic mechanism here is the passage of frontal systems tracking northeast from the Southern Ocean, reinforced by a positive SAM index at +2.79. A high SAM state shifts the storm track poleward on average, which in the Australian winter context tends to reduce the intensity and frequency of frontal incursions over southeastern Australia, yet the Queensland HDD anomaly at +10.8 above normal suggests some cold-surge penetration into the subtropics has occurred, likely associated with a recent frontal passage through the Tasman corridor. The IOD sitting at -0.22 is near-neutral with a slight negative tilt; at this level it does not impose a meaningful teleconnection signal on the eastern seaboard.
The demand-side read for the NEM is heating-dominated throughout. New South Wales at HDD 92.3, South Australia at 112.9, and Victoria at 117.9 all point to gas-for-heating and resistive electric heating load running above their summer-season floor. The day-over-day drift for NSW (from HDD 101.2 to 92.3) and Victoria (from 120.1 to 117.9) suggests the 15-day heating window is modestly easing toward the back end of the accumulation period, consistent with the passage of the cold surge rather than an intensifying event. Queensland's small lift from 41.7 to 43.3 is the only zone trending marginally harder on the heating side.
There is no cooling load of note anywhere in the AU data. This is a pure winter demand configuration, and the BENIGN regime designation reflects that while heating is elevated in NSW and SA, it sits within the range that existing dispatchable capacity handles without structural stress.
What to watch
For Japan, the next ECMWF ensemble run should be examined for any signal of ridge retrogression or trough development west of Honshu after day 7. A third consecutive run holding the ridge at current amplitude would confirm the El Niño forcing is maintaining a persistent, not episodic, pattern, which extends the demand-side read materially. For Australia, the key marker is whether the NSW HDD anomaly continues its day-over-day decline toward neutral or stabilises; a flattening in the next 24-hour update would indicate the post-frontal cold air mass is lingering longer over the southeast than the current trajectory implies, with implications for dispatch requirements across the Sydney Basin and the Liddell-to-Eraring corridor.
