Japan is carrying a summer heat anomaly well above seasonal norms across all three demand zones, with the Pacific High driving conditions consistent with El Niño reinforcement; Australia, by contrast, is sitting in a benign mid-winter pattern with degree-days tracking near normal.
Japan
The synoptic picture over the Japanese archipelago is dominated by a robust Pacific High maintaining its position to the south and east, suppressing cloud formation and locking in a pattern of persistently elevated surface temperatures. This is the mid-summer mechanism, the subtropical ridge anchoring heat over Honshu and Shikoku, compressing the monsoon remnants northward and leaving the three core demand zones exposed to sustained cooling load with no near-term relief.
The numbers reflect that setup with uncommon clarity. Tokyo's 15-day cumulative CDD stands at 187.4 against a seasonal normal of 150.1, an anomaly of +37.3 degree-days, or roughly 25 percent above where the capital would typically be at this point in the cycle. Chubu is running harder: 218.5 against a normal of 156.7, a surplus of +61.8. Kansai is similarly extended at 218.1 against 166.1, an anomaly of +52.0. The breadth of that signal matters, this is not a localised urban heat island effect but a domain-wide departure from seasonal expectation, driven by the same blocking mechanism operating across the entirety of the Tokai and Kinki regions simultaneously.
The El Niño context adds weight to the read. Nino3.4 is at +2.30, firmly in El Niño territory, and the summer analogue associated with that state typically favours continued Pacific High persistence and above-normal temperatures through the peak cooling season. The positive Arctic Oscillation (+1.23) is consistent with a strengthened mid-latitude westerly belt, which in the summer hemisphere tends to reinforce the ridge rather than undermine it.
On the demand side, the mechanism runs through residential and commercial air conditioning load, with evening system peaks the sensitive window. All three zones are accumulating CDD at rates that, if sustained, would rank among the more demanding summer draws on the JEPX system in recent seasons. The prior-period readings, Tokyo 176.1, Chubu 199.3, Kansai 189.9, confirm the trajectory is not plateauing; the current week-end totals are running ahead of where the previous measurement left off, suggesting the heat has intensified rather than abated through the period.
Australia
The NEM is in a different season and a different regime. Mid-winter across southeastern Australia is characterised by a procession of frontal systems tracking west-to-east across the Bight and into Bass Strait, and the current synoptic pattern is consistent with that climatological baseline, a benign description that in the Australian winter context means sustained heating demand rather than any stress condition.
New South Wales stands out within the NEM picture. Its 15-day HDD accumulation sits at 94.6 against a seasonal normal of 75.2, an anomaly of +19.3. That is a meaningful departure from expectation and suggests a colder-than-average airmass has been sitting over the state for an extended period, likely associated with a persistent cold pool tracking more northward than the winter mean. Victoria, by contrast, is running slightly below normal at 115.5 against 117.3, a modest negative anomaly that implies frontal systems have been less vigorous in delivering cold air to the southeast corner than usual. South Australia is fractionally above normal at +2.2, Queensland well within range at +3.2.
The AO, SAM, and IOD readings frame the medium-term context. The positive SAM (+2.79) is the operative signal for Australian winter: a strengthened annular mode compresses the westerly storm track southward toward the Antarctic margin, which in practice reduces the frequency and depth of cold fronts reaching southeastern Australia and tends to moderate both HDD anomalies and rainfall. The modest negative IOD (-0.22) has limited direct winter forcing on temperatures but may be worth tracking as the IOD develops into its climatologically active phase through August and September. The overall regime classification, BENIGN, reflects these offsetting tendencies; no single tripwire has cleared threshold.
The practical demand read for the NEM is that New South Wales heating load is running modestly elevated relative to seasonal expectation, while Victoria and South Australia are close to or below normal. Queensland's numbers remain small in absolute terms and within a band that does not distinguish this week from typical mid-winter.
What to Watch
Two things are worth monitoring at the next model run. First, watch whether the Pacific High over Japan maintains its current spatial extent through the Monday JEPX morning session, the previous-period CDD trajectory suggests the heat loading is still building across Chubu and Kansai, and any further northward ridge extension would add to that accumulation. Second, watch the New South Wales HDD trajectory into next week: the +19.3 anomaly is currently the sharpest departure within the NEM and sits far enough above normal that any fresh cold-surge reinforcement, consistent with a southward excursion of the polar front, could push the state's winter heating demand profile into territory that begins to matter for morning peak gas-fired generation.
