El Niño Tracking Toward Record Strength Sets Up a Winter of Elevated European Gas Risk
The signal that matters most over the coming weeks is not a European heatwave or an Asian typhoon, it is the accelerating development of what may become one of the largest El Niño events since reliable records began in 1950. Everything else in this outlook flows from that fact.
ENSO and Teleconnections
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center puts the Niño-3.4 index at +1.2°C in its latest weekly reading, with the eastern Niño-1+2 region already at +2.7°C. A downwelling Kelvin wave deepened the thermocline across the eastern Pacific last month, locking in further warming. The NMME ensemble forecasts intensification through year-end, with an 81% probability of a very strong event during October-December, the threshold that in previous cycles drove the most pronounced global impact patterns. NOAA currently gives this event a 97% chance of persisting through early spring 2027.
The atmospheric response is already well-coupled. Convection is suppressed over Indonesia, enhanced over the east-central Pacific, and the equatorial Southern Oscillation index is significantly negative. This is not a tentative ENSO state that could flip; it is a self-reinforcing system.
The NAO sits at +0.58 and the AO at +1.23, both modestly positive and maintaining the westerly flow regime that has kept European summers relatively temperate. The GEFS 16-day ensemble shows the NAO briefly dipping toward neutral or slightly negative around days 3-5, but the AO forecast strengthens sharply through the extended period, rising from +0.61 at day one to a projected +1.89 by day seven. That AO trajectory points toward sustained mild, westerly-dominated conditions over northwestern Europe for at least the next two weeks, suppressing any early-autumn blocking potential.
The MJO is active in Phase 5, amplitude 1.2, positioned over the Maritime Continent. This phase typically enhances convection over the western Pacific and dries the Indian Ocean sector, reinforcing monsoon suppression signals already embedded in the El Niño state. For traders watching JKM and South Asian demand, the convergence of El Niño-driven Indonesian drought, active MJO Phase 5, and a suppressed Maritime Continent is a consistent triple signal pointing toward tighter LNG balances across Southeast Asia through Q3.
The QBO at 50hPa reads -1.5 m/s easterly. Via the Holton-Tan mechanism, easterly QBO phases favor a weaker polar vortex in the following boreal winter, biasing the circulation toward negative AO and blocking events. That tendency does not manifest until November at the earliest, but it sits behind the autumn setup as a latent risk factor for a disrupted European winter.
Six-Week Temperature Trajectory
The EC46 ensemble shows Central Europe, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, peaking in weeks three and four, with Frankfurt at 21.5°C and Amsterdam at 19.6°C before a gradual retreat toward late-summer climatology by week six. The ensemble spread widens substantially over that horizon: Frankfurt's week-one range is roughly ±1.2°C, widening to ±4.7°C by week four. High confidence for the next ten days, meaningful uncertainty beyond.
Madrid stands out for a different reason. After 29.5°C in week one the EC46 drops the median to 27.1°C in week two, an unusual mid-summer dip, before recovering to 29°C in week three and then drifting steadily lower to 26°C by week six. The 2.3°C week-two correction cuts below typical July climatology for Iberia and may limit the near-term Iberian hydro deficit pressure, but the broader seasonal trajectory above that baseline remains warm-anomalous.
Tokyo and Osaka are on a cooling track after this week's heat. The EC46 puts Nagoya at 29.9°C in week one declining to 26.2°C by week six, a six-degree slide that, if it verifies, would materially reduce Japanese air conditioning load and ease spot LNG demand from JERA and other buyers through late August.
The most notable single-session revision comes from Sao Paulo, where yesterday's EC46 run cut 4-7°C from the late-July through early-August forecasts, 20.2°C now forecast for the 25th against yesterday's 27°C. That is a significant cooling injection into the Brazilian plateau in what is already austral winter, with implications for hydro inflow rates discussed below.
Regional Seasonal Outlooks
The C3S multi-model consensus is unusually firm on European temperatures. ECMWF, the Met Office, Météo-France, and DWD all point toward temperatures above the 80th percentile of the historical distribution virtually continent-wide through the forecast period. For the energy market, this translates into below-normal summer gas burn for space cooling, but the more structurally important signal is autumn: the C3S consensus sees wetter-than-average conditions for southern Europe in early autumn and central Europe in late autumn and early winter. Wet autumns tend to support reservoir refill and wind generation, but a warm, wet October-November followed by a vortex disruption in December, amplified by the easterly QBO bias, is a scenario that would stress European gas storage draws precisely when the injection season has ended.
JMA's seasonal outlook for Japan shows above-normal summer temperatures across Honshu, though the EC46 trajectory suggests the peak may already be passing as Pacific typhoon-season interference increases. Korea's KMA is consistent with JMA, pointing to above-normal temperatures through Q3 in a pattern typical of east-Pacific El Niño events.
NOAA's August-September-October outlook for the US flags above-normal temperatures across the West, South, and East with highest probabilities in the Northwest and southwestern Texas. The 8-14 day outlook similarly holds above-normal temperature signals across most of the CONUS. Houston's EC46 is the most stable of any city in the dataset, 28.9°C through week one expanding to 29.9°C in week two with no sign of retreat, pointing to persistent power burn across ERCOT through at least mid-August.
Brazil's hydro situation warrants specific attention. The sharp Sao Paulo cooling revisions in the EC46 align with a typical El Niño southern-displacement of Brazil's rainy-season onset. Dry conditions over the Southeast hydro catchments are consistent with El Niño composites, raising reservoir risk that passes directly into power sector fuel switching demand.
Hydro and Storage Context
EU gas storage entered the week on a solid trajectory, but the C3S consensus of a warm, relatively dry early autumn across southern and central Europe limits the usual September surplus-generation buffer. Nordic reservoir levels carry weight here: if Scandinavia's late-summer inflows disappoint, a pattern that historically aligns with positive AO and weak convective precipitation, EDF and Nordic interconnected systems will lean harder on German gas-fired capacity during the pre-winter period.
Strategic Positioning
- TTF Cal+1 and Q4-Q1 spreads: the easterly QBO, strengthening El Niño, and C3S warm-Europe consensus together create a tail risk for a disrupted polar vortex in late 2026. Winter TTF contracts price a warm-biased seasonal, that consensus is well-founded but leaves the QBO blocking risk underweighted.
- JKM September-October: EC46 Japanese cooling trajectory combined with active MJO Phase 5 in the Maritime Continent suppresses near-term restocking urgency. A softer August demand window may create an entry point into Q4 JKM before El Niño winter demand premiums arrive.
- ERCOT power Q3: Houston's sustained 29-30°C outlook through at least week two supports the near-curve. NOAA's above-normal ASO temperature signal for Texas is among the highest probability signals in the current suite.
- Brazilian hydro-linked power: Sao Paulo's sharp EC46 cooling revision does not resolve the seasonal dry-season risk, if anything, a cold, dry July over the plateau depresses near-term hydro inflows. Monitor Southeast reservoir levels for the Q4 fuel-switching demand signal.
- NBP winter strip: Met Office seasonal alignment with C3S warm-Europe consensus trims near-term UK heating demand risk, but the QBO-vortex setup supports holding some winter optionality rather than fading the strip entirely on warm-anomaly consensus.
- LNG spot into Southeast Asia: suppressed Indonesian convection under combined El Niño and MJO Phase 5 tightens regional supply while below-normal temperatures in Japan's near-term EC46 cap demand.
