El Niño Enters Record Territory: A Summer of Structural Heat and Autumn Demand Uncertainty --- ENSO & Teleconnections The ocean is running hotter than it has in decades. NOAA's latest ENSO Diagnostic Discussion puts the Niño-3.4 weekly SST anomaly at +2.0°C, a figure that, combined with an equatorial subsurface showing active downwelling Kelvin wave reinforcement, places this event on a trajectory toward the historical record books. NOAA's NMME ensemble now assigns an 81% probability of a very strong El Niño during October-December, with 97% confidence the event persists through early spring 2027. The ONI stands at +1.0 and rising. This is not a garden-variety event. The atmospheric response is already organised. Low-level westerly anomalies are entrenched across the western and central equatorial Pacific, upper-level easterlies have reversed, and Indonesian convection is suppressed. The Pacific Walker Circulation is effectively in El Niño configuration. For energy traders, the downstream implications run across nearly every commodity basin. The NAO is currently positive at +0.58 and the AO at +1.23, reflecting the broadly zonal, westerly-dominated pattern that has characterised European summer to date. GEFS ensemble projections over the next 16 days show the NAO drifting toward neutral and slightly negative by mid-forecast, while the AO remains elevated, a divergence that tends to produce a more meandering jet over Europe rather than a hard Scandinavian block. The MJO sits in Phase 4 at amplitude 0.9, which is effectively noise at that strength. The QBO is easterly at 50hPa (-1.5 m/s), a configuration that the Holton-Tan mechanism associates with a weaker stratospheric polar vortex in boreal winter, which tends to favour negative NAO and blocking over the North Atlantic, but this is a probabilistic seasonal tilt, not a deterministic forecast for the coming weeks. 6-Week Temperature Trajectory EC46 paints a consistent picture across the European continent: above-normal temperatures now, with a gradual trend toward seasonal norms by late August. Frankfurt runs at 24.3°C in week one, declining to 20.2°C by week six, with the ensemble spread widening sharply from ±2.4°C in week one to ±4.1°C by weeks five and six. Paris follows the same arc, 25.6°C now, 21.9°C in six weeks, with the inter-quartile range nearly doubling by the midpoint. Oslo shows the sharpest drop: 21.1°C to 15.0°C across the six-week window, ensemble tightening relative to the central European cities as Scandinavian temperatures approach seasonal norms more predictably. The implication is directional. Near-term European cooling demand remains supported through late July, but the ensemble spread for August is wide enough that the market should assign genuine probability mass to a cool August in Northwest Europe, a scenario that would bring forward autumn gas demand positioning. Houston tells the opposite story. Week-two temperatures rise to 28.6°C and the ensemble projects 29.5-29.6°C through weeks three and four, with a spread of just ±1.7°C. NOAA's 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks confirm above-normal temperatures across most of the continental US. US power burn through August looks structurally elevated. Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka show a narrow 2°C band across the six-week period, 26-27°C range throughout, with week-on-week spread consistently tight. Japan's summer heat demand picture is well-anchored. Regional Seasonal Outlooks On Europe, the C3S multi-system ensemble, drawing from ECMWF, Met Office, Météo-France, DWD, JMA, NCEP, and five other centres, reaches a rare degree of consensus: above-average temperatures, very likely exceeding the 80th percentile of the historical distribution, are projected virtually across the continent throughout the six-month forecast period. Southern Europe faces below-average precipitation in early autumn; central Europe sees wetter conditions entering late autumn and early winter. DWD's seasonal output is broadly consistent with the ECMWF C3S signal, leaving little agency disagreement on the direction. Where uncertainty remains is in magnitude: whether Europe sees the 70th or 90th percentile warming in Q4 determines winter gas demand by a meaningful margin. For East Asia, JMA's 3-month outlook shows above-normal temperatures across most of Japan through the August-October period. The strong El Niño is associated with enhanced convection over the central Pacific that tends to amplify the western Pacific subtropical high, keeping Japan and Korea under persistent heat through summer. The Korean Meteorological Administration's seasonal models align with JMA on this point. China's summer monsoon continues active over the Yangtze basin, with the CMA outlook showing above-normal rainfall in central China, consistent with the El Niño precipitation dipole that suppresses the Maritime Continent while enhancing summer rainfall across East Asia's mid-latitudes. The India monsoon is broadly on track. Mumbai's EC46 forecast holds at a stable 25.9-26.1°C across the six-week window, consistent with a monsoon in active phase. NOAA's CPC C3S integration flags below-average precipitation for southern Asia in the August-October window, the canonical El Niño drought signal that arrives in the monsoon's retreat phase. If that materialises, Indian hydro inflows weaken into Q4, lifting gas-fired and coal-fired power demand at the margin. For Russia, the easterly QBO combined with a strong El Niño raises the seasonal odds of a disrupted stratospheric polar vortex in November-February. Roshydromet's seasonal outlook tends to flag warmer-than-normal Siberian conditions through autumn. A warm Siberian October would suppress early-season Russian gas domestic demand, but the winter tail risk, should the vortex weaken, is elevated. NOAA's US seasonal outlook is unambiguous: above-normal temperatures across most of the CONUS for JAS, with the Pacific Northwest and New England showing the highest probability anomalies. Hurricane season setup favours reduced Atlantic activity under El Niño-related shear in the Gulf, though the season is live and individual storms remain possible. Hydro & Storage EU gas storage stands in comfortable shape for mid-July, above the five-year average, but the trajectory through autumn depends on August demand. A hot August draws down storage faster and narrows the cushion entering the winter injection-to-withdrawal transition. Nordic hydro reservoirs have benefited from above-normal precipitation, providing a buffer for Nordic power, but a dry September-October under southern European drought conditions could shift hydro dispatch south and tighten the Nordic surplus. Brazil's rainy season ended broadly above normal for the major hydro basins. The El Niño precipitation pattern for Brazil in August-October favours dryness in the north but above-normal rainfall in the south, net hydro is roughly neutral through Q3, tightening in Q4 if the northern deficit intensifies. Strategic Positioning - TTF Cal-27 winter strip: The C3S and ECMWF consensus for above 80th-percentile European temperatures running through the forecast period supports the current backwardation, but the easterly QBO introduces a non-trivial probability of a blocked, cold December-January that the market is not fully pricing. The Holton-Tan pathway is slow-onset; the signal is not for today's balancing, but for options positioning on the winter tail. - European power August: The EC46 spread for late August across Northwest Europe is wide enough to warrant a long position in peak power for the period, a cool August would flip a deficit signal rapidly if cooling demand evaporates before storage is adequately rebuilt. - US Henry Hub August-September: NOAA's sustained above-normal temperature call for the CONUS through JAS is the cleanest near-term signal. Power burn should remain elevated. Henry Hub Aug-Sep contracts have underlying support that the El Niño background reinforces. - JKM Q4 2026: An 81% probability of a very strong El Niño in OND, combined with JMA's above-normal Japan temperature call through October, sets up structurally firm LNG import demand in Northeast Asia entering the heating season. JKM Q4 basis relative to TTF warrants attention. - Indian coal and LNG Q4: If the CPC below-normal monsoon precipitation signal for southern Asia materialises in September-October, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh hydro shortfalls would lift thermal generation requirements at the margin. This is a Q4, not Q3, positioning consideration. - EU gas storage trajectory: Every additional week of above-normal European temperatures through July increases the probability that storage enters October below the five-year average for that date. Monitor the AGSI+ weekly injection figures, a deceleration from current pace would be the first concrete trigger for a Q1-27 widening thesis.
