Key change: The 12Z run trims nothing off the near-term European warmth but sharpens the week-2 cool-down, with Frankfurt and Paris ensembles now dropping 4-5C from week 1 to week 2; the US East Coast, meanwhile, ran 3-3.5C warmer in the day 7-9 window than yesterday's 00Z solution around New York. Synoptic Setup & Forecast Evolution The dominant feature for energy demand this week is the strength and persistence of subtropical and mid-latitude ridging on both sides of the Atlantic. High pressure and warmth with limited frontal passage is not a heavy-precipitation pattern, and the extended EC46 trajectory keeps Oslo trending cooler but offers no strong wet signal, a setup that does nothing to help a Nordic hydro balance and quietly favors a continued deficit. Southern & Eastern Europe Iberia and the Mediterranean are the heat engine. Madrid holds week 1 near 29C and the EC46 pushes week 2 to 30.5C (ensemble to 33.0C), with Rome and Paris' southern reaches locked warm. Second, Houston's forecast winds were cut again in this run (Jul 14 max down to 9.3, Jul 15 temps trimmed), a marginal easing of the Texas heat's edge but no change to the dominant hot-and-humid regime. On the Gulf: it is peak season, but the provided data shows no organized tropical development signal. The subtropical ridge is favorable for an enhanced Southwest monsoon, which is the main convective story rather than any tropical cyclone threat in this dataset. The ECMWF seasonal bulletin's flag of below-average precipitation over southern Asia and the maritime continent in August-October is the El Niño fingerprint to watch for monsoon performance later in the season. Extended Range & Regime (Weeks 3-6) The background state is unambiguous and strengthening: El Niño. The latest weekly Niño-3.4 anomaly is +2.0C, ONI at +1.0, and NOAA now puts an 81% chance of a very strong El Niño by October-December, an event that would rank among the largest in the record back to 1950.
