Synoptic Setup & Forecast Evolution
The dominant feature this cycle is not European, it's the anomalous mid-level ridge parked over the US Northern High Plains, and how the hemispheric wave pattern arranges itself around it. That ridge is the anchor. Everything else is downstream.
What changed since yesterday: the ensemble firmed up the retrograde. Yesterday's run kept the Northeast trough offshore and warm-leaning into week 2; today's 12Z pulls it westward toward the Ohio Valley and drops New York's Jul 19-20 highs by three to four degrees. That's a coherent signal, not noise, the temperature mean fell in lockstep with the max (Jul 19 mean −3.0C). Over Europe, the story is the opposite direction of travel: the front-loaded warmth is if anything more certain (London day-5 warm bias now 100% of members above 1sd, 92% above 1.5sd), but the week-2 cooldown deepened, with London's ECMWF week-2 mean sliding to 15.6C and the day-10 ensemble now carrying a 29% cold-bias tail at Amsterdam and 37% at Frankfurt.

The counterpoint is the East. A trough retrogrades from southeastern Canada into the Northeast and toward the Ohio Valley, and today's run leaned into it, New York's Jul 19-20 highs cut 3-4C, near-normal temperatures favored from the Northeast through the Tennessee and Middle Mississippi Valleys. New York's week-2 mean sits at 24.8C, well off the 27.4C week-1. So the national picture is a hot, ridge-dominated West and center against a near-normal, trough-influenced East, a classic El Niño summer dipole. Boston threads it, warming from a cool weekend (20.5C Sunday) into a mid-week spike (29.9C Wednesday) as a transient ridge passes before the trough digs back in.
It's peak Atlantic hurricane season (Jul-Nov), and El Niño's enhanced upper-level westerly shear across the tropical Atlantic is the seasonal suppressant that typically holds a lid on development. Nothing in the current guidance resolves an organized Gulf or Atlantic system, but this is the window to watch, and the absence of a signal at range is not the same as an all-clear.
Other, Australia, Brazil, India
Southern Australia is in a cold, wet, windy winter setup. Adelaide and Melbourne carry heavy heating demand (HDD 100 and 108 over 15 days), and Adelaide's early week is genuinely stormy, 31 km/h winds and 11mm rain Saturday, easing midweek before winds return. This is a productive wind-and-hydro regime for the NEM's southern regions, punctuated by the calm midweek lull (Adelaide winds collapsing to 6-8 km/h Wed-Thu under a passing high) before the next front. The EC46 extended range holds Melbourne and Adelaide in the 9-11C band through week-6, a persistent cold winter signal, no thaw.
Brazil's São Paulo shows the most interesting extended-range move: a jump from a cold 15.7C week-1 to 18.5C week-2, with an enormous spread (12.6-22.2C) opening from week-3 onward, the ensemble cannot decide between successive winter cold incursions and milder interludes, which matters for Brazilian heating demand and, at the margin, hydro-basin conditions. Confidence there is low by design.
India's Mumbai sits stable in the monsoon at 26-27C with a tight envelope, and the ECMWF seasonal note flags El Niño's below-average precipitation risk over southern Asia into Aug-Oct, the monsoon-suppression signal to watch for Indian power and agricultural demand later in the season, not this fortnight.
Extended Range & Regime (Weeks 3-6)
The governing regime is positive-NAO / positive-AO trending toward breakdown.
