El Niño Locks In: A Very Strong Event Now 81% Likely for Q4, Reframing the Northern-Hemisphere Winter Risk Premium
The dominant medium-term signal is no longer whether El Niño arrives but how large it gets. NOAA's latest diagnostic puts weekly Niño-3.4 at +1.2°C, and our index feed has the raw eastern-Pacific SST running hotter still, Niño-1+2 at +2.7°C on the back of a downwelling Kelvin wave. NOAA now assigns an 81% chance of a *very strong* event during October-December, one that would rank among the largest since 1950, and a 97% chance it persists through early spring 2027. For traders, the six-month tail, a strong El Niño winter, is now the base case to position around, not a scenario to hedge.
ENSO & Teleconnections
The coupled system is fully engaged: negative Southern Oscillation Index, suppressed convection over Indonesia, enhanced convection near the Date Line. The ECMWF C3S grand ensemble median for the relative Niño-3.4 index now sits near the highest values of the past few decades, and the CPC consolidation peaks at +1.9°C in NDJ 2026-27. That trajectory matters more than today's number, because it tilts the winter demand distribution before the heating season even starts.
The North Atlantic is currently in a warm-summer regime. NAO printed +0.58 and the AO +1.23 at end-June, and the 16-day GEFS ensemble keeps the AO strongly positive, several members push +1.6 to +1.9 by the back end. A persistently positive AO through late July means a contained polar vortex and no early cold intrusions, reinforcing the near-term warmth over NW Europe. MJO is weak (Phase 3, amplitude 0.8), so no strong sub-seasonal forcing to fight. The wildcard is the QBO, easterly at -1.5 m/s: an easterly QBO tends to favor a weaker, more disruptable stratospheric vortex later in the season, which raises, probabilistically, not deterministically, the odds of -NAO blocking episodes once winter arrives. That is the one teleconnection worth watching into Q4.
6-Week Temperature Trajectory
EC46 shows a clean cooling arc for continental Europe off the current heat. Paris runs 28.5°C in week 1 and falls to 21.8°C by week 6; Frankfurt 25.2°C to 20.7°C; London 22.3°C to 19.0°C; Oslo 20.2°C to 14.9°C. The signal is a return toward climatology, not a cold anomaly, but the ensemble spread widens sharply from week 2 onward (Frankfurt week 4 spans 18.0-26.7°C, Paris 19.3-27.8°C), so confidence in the level is low even as the direction is clear. Iberia is the exception: Madrid holds 27-30°C across all six weeks with a tight envelope, sustaining Spanish cooling demand. In the US, EC46 has cut New York's mid-to-late-July run by 3-4°C versus yesterday, easing the Northeast heat, while Houston stays pinned near 30°C, Gulf cooling load is not going anywhere.
Regional Seasonal Outlooks
For Europe, the agencies are unusually aligned on the warm side. ECMWF's C3S multi-system, which folds in the Met Office, Météo-France, DWD and JMA, calls temperature "well-above average," exceeding the 80th percentile, virtually across the continent throughout the six-month window. That consensus caps winter heating-demand upside and argues against a structurally cold gas-demand season, even if the QBO opens the door to cold snaps. On precipitation the split is seasonal: wetter-than-average south in early autumn, shifting to central Europe in late autumn/early winter, relevant for hydro and for autumn wind. In East Asia, ECMWF favors above-normal precipitation Oct-Dec, consistent with an El Niño signature that typically tempers North Asian cold-demand extremes for Japan and Korea. For the Americas, NOAA's JAS outlook is firmly warm: highest probabilities across the Pacific Northwest and the Eastern Seaboard, with enhanced odds along the New England and Florida coasts, supportive of sustained US power burn. The clearest El Niño fingerprint is over the Maritime Continent: ECMWF flags confident below-average rainfall Aug-Oct across Indonesia and southern Asia, a dry-season risk for Indonesian coal supply and hydro.
Hydro & Storage
The precipitation pattern is a two-sided story for supply. ECMWF's above-average signal for southern South America is constructive for Brazil's southern reservoirs into Q4, easing the thermal-dispatch risk that a dry El Niño year can bring. Against that, the maritime-continent drought risk threatens Indonesian hydro and rain-affected coal logistics. In Europe, the warm-but-wetter-central autumn profile is neutral-to-supportive for Nordic reservoir refill and does nothing to threaten the EU gas-storage build, which continues to track a comfortable summer injection path against a mild demand backdrop. A warm European winter outlook, if it verifies, keeps storage exit levels above the multi-year worry line.
