Seasonal Weather Outlook, Friday July 10, 2026 A rapidly intensifying El Niño, now tracking toward one of the strongest events on record, is set to reshape demand patterns across all major energy markets through winter 2026-27. ENSO and Teleconnections El Niño has arrived and is strengthening faster than most models anticipated. The Niño 3.4 weekly sea surface temperature anomaly reached +2.0°C as of July 1 (2026-07-01), with the eastern Niño 1+2 region running at +2.7°C, the leading edge of what NOAA now assesses as an 81% probability of a very strong El Niño event during October-December 2026. ECMWF's C3S grand ensemble, updated June 26, shows 75% of members exceeding 2.5°C amplitude in Niño 3.4 by November, with the upper tail approaching the largest values recorded since 1970. NOAA puts the probability of El Niño persisting through early spring 2027 at 97%. The coupled atmospheric-oceanic response is established: low-level westerly wind anomalies over the western and central Pacific, suppressed convection over Indonesia, enhanced convection near the Date Line. These are not precursor signals, this is the self-sustaining mechanism of a mature and amplifying event. The NAO is currently positive at +0.58 (June 30 reading) and the AO more firmly positive at +1.23. Both suppress atmospheric blocking over the North Atlantic and Northwest Europe, sustaining a mild, westerly-dominated pattern. The GEFS 16-day forecast shows the AO trending further positive through mid-July, with projected values above +1.5 in the final week of the window. The NAO picture is mixed, the ensemble shows a brief dip toward neutral or marginally negative around weeks two and three, suggesting a short-lived window for more settled anticyclonic conditions over Western Europe. The QBO (quasi-biennial oscillation) is in easterly phase at -1.5 m/s. Under Holton-Tan dynamics, an easterly QBO favors a weaker polar vortex through the coming winter, raising the probability of negative NAO episodes and blocking events across Europe in December-February. This is a probabilistic tilt that runs counter to the typical El Niño winter signature of mild NW European conditions, and it is the primary source of uncertainty in the winter demand outlook. The MJO remains weak in Phase 3 (amplitude 0.7), insufficient to materially modulate European or Asian demand at the multi-week scale. Six-Week Temperature Trajectory The EC46 ensemble paints a consistent picture for Northwest Europe: a warm first week followed by a sharp step back to near-seasonal levels, with moderate spread through weeks two to six. Amsterdam reaches 22.7°C in week one with a tight range (20.9-24.4°C), then drops to 19.9°C in week two with a much wider 16.9-23.4°C spread, indicating high model divergence on the regime that follows the initial warm spell. Frankfurt mirrors this at 25.1°C in week one, 21.3°C in week two, with the range from 17.4 to 25.8°C representing near-maximum uncertainty at the medium range. Both cities settle into the 19-22°C band through weeks three to six. The latest run brought sharp upward revisions compared to yesterday. Amsterdam on July 15-16 shifted 2.2-2.8°C warmer. New York saw the largest change: July 18 was upgraded by 3.4-3.5°C, now centered at 29.8-36.1°C across ensemble members, a pronounced heat event forecast for the US Northeast around July 18 (Friday). Houston remains steadily warm throughout, building from 28.4°C in week one to a sustained 30°C in weeks four and five with a tight spread, reflecting persistent US Gulf Coast summer. Nordic cities (Oslo, Amsterdam) cool toward seasonal norms from week two, limiting any air-conditioning-driven power demand tail in Scandinavia. Regional Seasonal Outlooks In Europe, the ensemble consensus leans above-normal for temperature through summer. ECMWF data shows warm-anomaly probabilities of 47-52% at Amsterdam and Frankfurt across the six-week window, with peak probabilities above 95% at Frankfurt in individual weeks. Cold probabilities remain compressed: anomalies at the 1.5 standard deviation threshold average below 4% across both cities. For European power markets, sustained above-normal summer temperatures raise cooling demand and pressure interconnection capacity during low-wind periods. In the US, NOAA's JAS seasonal outlook favors above-normal temperatures across the western CONUS and Pacific Northwest, with the highest probabilities in those regions and along the Eastern Seaboard through Florida. The 8-14 day outlook confirms above-normal temperatures across most of the CONUS. In East Asia, Japan and Korea are in El Niño territory. Strong events typically produce warmer-than-normal winters in Japan and Korea, which would weigh on JKM demand in Q1 2027. For now, the EC46 has Nagoya and Osaka holding above 26°C across all six weeks, sustained summer cooling demand. Brazil sits under the El Niño signal for above-normal austral summer precipitation in the southeast, which is net positive for hydro reservoir recovery heading into 2026-27 and bearish for LNG spot demand in that market. Hydro and Storage No specific EU storage or Nordic reservoir data is included in today's source packet. ICE Endex TTF front-month traded at €48.86 on Friday (2026-07-10) and the Q+1 contract at €43.30. The El Niño setup is broadly constructive for European storage filling this summer: above-normal temperatures sustain gas-to-power burn but warmer winters reduce the withdrawal pressure in Q1 2027. Strategic Positioning - EU gas winter 2026-27 (TTF/NBP Cal+1): El Niño's milder winter tilt for NW Europe creates a bearish bias. The easterly QBO complicates this, elevated polar vortex disruption risk could spike demand. The spread between a mild and a cold winter scenario is unusually wide at this lead time. - US gas (late July): The EC46 upward revision of 3.4-3.5°C for New York around July 18 (Friday) and sustained southern warmth support near-term power burn. NYMEX Henry Hub front-month is exposed to cooling degree-day upside prints through late July. - JKM Q1 2027: A strong El Niño raises weather-bearish risk for Japan/Korea winter heating demand. JKM forward carry into Q1 2027 may prove rich if the El Niño evolves as NOAA forecasts. - Japan summer (ongoing): Nagoya and Osaka above 26°C through the six-week EC46 horizon, JEPX afternoon peak pricing supported. - European power (weeks 1-2): Frankfurt and Amsterdam above 21-25°C in week one, then cooling toward 19-22°C. Air-conditioning demand fades after the first week, easing spot pressure. Wind generation depends on the anticyclonic spell flagged by the NAO dip in weeks two to three. - Brazil hydro: El Niño is net positive for southeastern reservoir inflows over austral summer 2026-27, bearish for Brazilian thermal gas and LNG spot demand in Q1 2027.
