Seasonal Weather Outlook, Tuesday, 7 July 2026 A maturing El Niño, now tracking toward historic amplitude, is the dominant force shaping the medium-term weather picture, and the implications for European winter gas demand and Asian LNG are already trading on the forward curve. ENSO and Teleconnections El Niño conditions solidified last month. The Niño-3.4 index reached +2.0°C in the week ending 1 July, with the eastern Niño-1+2 region at +2.1°C, a configuration that favours rapid intensification through the boreal summer. NOAA's ENSO Diagnostic Discussion puts a 63% probability on a very strong event during November–January, which would rank among the largest in the post-1950 record. The C3S June forecast is more emphatic: 75% of the grand multi-model ensemble exceeds 2.5°C amplitude in Niño-3.4 by November, and ECMWF notes that models with the lowest amplitude in the current ensemble have historically been the most prone to underestimation. The subsurface heat reservoir underpinning this forecast is intact. Significantly above-average temperatures persist at depth across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, even as the surface index has temporarily plateaued. Low-level westerly wind anomalies over the central Pacific are reinforcing the warming signal. The atmospheric response is near-classic El Niño structure: AO is strongly positive at +1.23 and NAO at +0.58 as of 30 June, supporting a mild, stormy European pattern through summer. GEFS 16-day forecasts carry the AO back up toward +1.89 by Day 7 after a brief mid-period dip toward neutral, consistent with a well-coupled polar vortex that suppresses blocking. This is supportive of continued low gas demand in Europe for now. However, the QBO at 50 hPa is running easterly at -1.5 m/s. The Holton-Tan mechanism links easterly QBO phases to a statistically weaker polar vortex in NH winter, it does not guarantee disruption, but it raises the probability. Combined with a strong El Niño, this configuration tends to favour an increased number of sudden stratospheric warming events in winter 2026-27, which carry blocking and cold-outbreak risk for Northwest Europe. MJO is currently weak at phase 3, amplitude 0.3, no active tropical forcing. Six-Week Temperature Trajectory The EC46 ensemble shows a clear cooling trend across Northwest Europe from early July onward. Amsterdam comes in at 21.1°C week one, slides to around 19.0°C by week three and holds in the 19–19.5°C range through week six. Frankfurt follows the same arc: 24.4°C week one, 21.1°C by week six. London drops from 23.3°C to 19.1°C. Ensemble spread is tightest in week one and widens materially by week three onward, Frankfurt week four spans 16.8°C to 26.4°C, reflecting genuine uncertainty about the mid-summer blocking pattern. The EC46 also recorded a notable downward revision between yesterday's and today's run: Amsterdam week-two temperatures cut by 2.7–3.0°C, London by 1.9–2.3°C. This is a meaningful cross-run shift, not noise. If it consolidates in coming runs, it points to softer European cooling demand through mid-July than priced last week. Houston is a contrast. The EC46 shows 28.9°C week one rising to 30.1°C by week four and sustaining above 29.7°C through week six, tight spread, high confidence, no meaningful break. Japan is warming: Nagoya runs from 24.1°C week one to 26.4°C by week five. Regional Seasonal Outlooks In Europe, the agencies broadly agree on a mild, wetter-than-average summer. NOAA CPC's seasonal discussion from 18 June flags above-normal precipitation across much of the western CONUS under El Niño's atmospheric footprint, and ECMWF's ensemble shows 82.3% probability of above-normal temperatures for Amsterdam over the coming weeks, with 56% odds of exceeding 1.5 standard deviations above climatology. Warm summers typically support wind generation but suppress gas-for-power burn, the near-term EU gas demand picture is soft. The winter outlook is where the uncertainty concentrates. A strong El Niño has historically delivered mild winters to Scandinavia and the UK but leaves Central Europe more ambiguous. The easterly QBO introduces a competing signal: if it amplifies the Holton-Tan pathway through autumn, the polar vortex could weaken episodically from December onward, periodically delivering cold spells to Northwest Europe that the El Niño base state would otherwise preclude. Neither ECMWF nor DWD has published a formal winter 2026-27 seasonal outlook yet; the June C3S product remains the operative reference. In East Asia, the El Niño signal for Japan and Korea typically means a warmer winter, lower residential heating demand, downward pressure on JKM for Asian winter delivery. JMA's 3-month outlook confirms above-normal temperatures across Honshu for the August–October window; the implication for winter is a continuation of the warm anomaly. The Osaka and Nagoya EC46 trajectories, already trending toward 26°C by week five, are consistent with this reading. India's monsoon is tracking through Mumbai at 26–27°C, with the gradual week-on-week cooling through July matching a normal monsoon progression. No disruption signal from ENSO at this stage, El Niño typically suppresses monsoon rainfall, but onset has already occurred, limiting the immediate supply-disruption risk. Brazil's Sao Paulo saw the EC46 cut temperatures by 2.0–2.3°C across multiple July and August days in today's run, a signal worth watching for hydropower basin rainfall, given that the Southern Hemisphere winter dry season is the critical drawdown period. Hydro and Storage EU gas storage continues its injection season from a relatively comfortable starting point. The mid-summer mild anomaly across Northwest Europe is supportive of above-average injection rates, reducing the likelihood of an autumn storage shortfall, a bearish near-term signal for TTF front-quarter. Nordic reservoirs typically underperform in El Niño years, but the positive AO pattern has been delivering above-normal westerlies and precipitation to Scandinavia. No specific concern for the August–September hydro window at this stage. Strategic Positioning - TTF Q4 2026 / Cal-27: Mild European summer and favourable injection trajectory are near-term bearish. The medium-term uncertainty, easterly QBO plus strong El Niño raising cold-outbreak odds for winter 2026-27, supports buying winter risk on dips rather than outright short strategies through autumn. - JKM November–February: Weak Japan winter demand under classic El Niño warming is a headwind for Asian LNG spot. However, 63% odds of a very strong event have not fully priced the tail scenarios, extreme El Niño sometimes delivers anomalous cold to the Korean Peninsula in the coldest months. - US natural gas, NYMEX winter strip: Sustained Houston heat through mid-summer supports power burn and early withdrawal pressure on US storage. Monitor weekly EIA prints. - European power, Q3: Softer cooling demand aligned with the EC46 downward revision is mildly bearish for near-term German baseload. Wind-heavy weeks under positive AO add generation-side pressure. - Atlantic LNG cargoes, Q4–Q1: If the El Niño/QBO winter pathway materialises into European cold snaps, TTF-JKM arb windows could re-open sharply. Position sizing for winter cargo flexibility should reflect above-normal tail risk from November onward. - Brazil hydro: The EC46 cooling revision for São Paulo in late July–early August warrants monitoring. El Niño dry-season impact on the Paraná basin is the key variable for regional power prices in Q4.
