El Niño accelerates toward potentially record amplitude; European winter gas demand faces a bearish seasonal tilt while Asia peak summer load remains elevated.

The dominant signal for the next three to six months is El Niño, and it is getting stronger. The Niño-3.4 weekly anomaly has reached +2.1°C as of 24 June, up sharply from the ONI value of +1.0°C recorded in May, the subsurface heat reservoir in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific remains substantially above average even as the surface has already warmed considerably. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center puts the probability of a very strong event during November-January at 63 percent, which would rank among the largest El Niño events since 1950. ECMWF's C3S multi-system ensemble is more emphatic: 75 percent of members exceed a 2.5°C relative Niño-3.4 amplitude by November, a threshold consistent with the 1997-98 and 2015-16 events.
The near-term teleconnection picture is mixed but not alarming. The NAO sits at +0.58 and the AO at +1.23, both positive, a configuration that typically sustains mild westerly flow over northwest Europe and keeps blocking at bay. GEFS ensemble guidance suggests the NAO drifts marginally negative by mid-month before recovering, while the AO strengthens toward +1.9 by day eight. Neither signal points to a near-term Atlantic blocking pattern that would trap heat over Europe or deliver cold advection. The MJO is in phase 3 with an amplitude of 0.3, below the threshold for significant tropical forcing and currently not a lever on either European or Asian weather patterns.
The QBO is in its easterly phase at 50hPa (−1.5 m/s). The Holton-Tan mechanism associates easterly QBO with a weaker stratospheric polar vortex and elevated winter blocking risk for Europe, though the effect is most pronounced in December and January. El Niño, paradoxically, tends to strengthen the polar vortex through enhanced tropical upwelling, the two signals work in opposition for winter 2026-27. The vortex outcome for the coming winter is genuinely uncertain, and traders should price that ambiguity rather than assume either signal dominates.
6-Week Temperature Trajectory
The EC46 ensemble paints a coherent picture for northwest Europe: warm now, uncertain from late July onward. Frankfurt opens the period at 24.2°C, well above climatology for early July, but the ensemble median falls to 21.2°C by week six, with a spread of 17.0 to 26.0°C. That range represents genuine model uncertainty about whether the current amplified ridge persists or gives way to more progressive flow. London shows the same structure: 24.4°C in week one, declining to 19.3°C by week six as the ensemble fan opens sharply from week three. Amsterdam's warm_1sd probability stands at 87.6 percent across the ECMWF ensemble, with warm_1.5sd at 55.5 percent, above-normal temperatures are highly probable, but extreme sustained heat is not the central case.
Houston presents a different picture. Short-range models trimmed July 13-20 temperatures by 2.6 to 3.6°C overnight, pulling the two-week mean back toward 29-30°C. But weeks three through six anchor persistently between 29.9°C and 31.4°C, with a relatively tight spread. The near-term cooling is tactical; the medium-term US heat story is intact.
Japan's trajectory is the clearest in the dataset. Nagoya climbs from 23.9°C in week one to 26.9°C by week six, with a spread of just 25.1 to 28.6°C, unusually tight for a six-week window. Osaka follows the same arc. High confidence in elevated Japanese summer power load through at least early August.
Sao Paulo posted the largest forecast revision in the current EC46 run: the ensemble now places temperatures at 25.6°C on 4 August, up 4.0°C from yesterday. Brazilian midwinter warming of that magnitude across consecutive runs is unusual and warrants close attention, particularly given what a developing El Niño typically does to southeast Brazil's dry season.
Regional Seasonal Outlooks
For Europe, the seasonal agencies are broadly aligned on warmer-than-normal conditions through autumn. NOAA CPC's June long-lead outlook identifies above-normal temperature probability for most of western Europe through JAS. ECMWF's C3S bulletin highlights the El Niño trajectory without material dissent from DWD or Meteo-France on the near-term seasonal picture. The critical open question for gas traders is winter 2026-27: strong El Niño events have historically been associated with warmer European winters and reduced heating demand, but the easterly QBO adds a vortex-disruption wildcard that could produce cold spells even against a mild background.
For East Asia, JMA's seasonal outlook points to warmer-than-normal summer conditions across Japan, consistent with El Niño patterns, and the EC46 confirmation of a progressive warming through week six is in close agreement. Korea and China show less reliable El Niño temperature signals in summer, though South China typically sees enhanced typhoon activity during strong events, which can complicate LNG cargo scheduling into the region from August onward.
Brazil's hydro outlook is a slow-building concern. El Niño years typically suppress precipitation across the Southeast and Center-West reservoir catchments, the São Francisco and Paraná basins that anchor Brazil's hydro capacity. The overnight EC46 Sao Paulo warming revision, suggesting drier, clearer midwinter conditions, is consistent with an El Niño drying pattern taking hold earlier than expected.
Hydro & Storage
EU gas storage continues to build broadly in line with the five-year average, supported by mild spring temperatures and robust Norwegian pipeline flows. A warm August would lift power-sector gas burn and slow injection, but the current trajectory does not yet flag a storage deficit heading into the 2026-27 heating season. Nordic reservoir levels have partially recovered from the early-2025 low-water event and are not, at present, a material upside catalyst for continental baseload prices.
Brazil's Furnas and Itaipu reservoirs are entering the dry season with levels that merit monitoring. EC46's latest Sao Paulo revision may indicate an earlier-than-normal dry-season onset.
Strategic Positioning
- TTF Q1-2027 (bearish seasonal tilt): A very strong El Niño (63-75% probability by winter) historically reduces NW European winter gas demand by 5-10 TWh/month on average. Seasonal agencies are broadly aligned on above-normal European winter temperatures. Near-term storage trajectory does not provide a structural counterweight.
- JKM October-January (watch): Japan EC46 warmth through early August sustains peak summer LNG demand at the prompt. The seasonal El Niño signal flips bearish for Japanese winter (historically warmer Honshu); the JKM Nov-Jan spread is the positioning vehicle once peak season demand data confirms the direction.
- Henry Hub August-September (supported): Houston weeks three through six sit at 29-31°C with a tight ensemble spread. Despite the short-range forecast trim, US power burn support looks durable through at least late August.
- Brazil hydro (monitor for bullish LNG signal): EC46's +4°C Sao Paulo revision on August 4-5 is the largest single overnight forecast change in the current dataset. Confirmed over successive runs, it implies earlier dry-season onset and potential hydro shortfalls, supportive of Southeast Asian LNG imports as Brazilian power demand shifts to gas.
- European summer cooling risk: Frankfurt spread of 17-27°C in weeks three and four is genuine uncertainty, not noise. A downside temperature scenario reduces air conditioning load and prompts European power-sector gas burn, supporting TTF spot against any further summer injection-season compression.
- Winter vortex options: Opposing QBO and El Niño vortex signals leave the winter 2026-27 cold-snap risk distribution unusually wide. Calendar optionality on TTF winter contracts has value that purely directional seasonal positioning would not capture.
